Here is another caboose, HOn3 #451. It was built from a standard gauge bachmann bobber caboose, and probably previously offered by AHM or other manufacturers. I see these at train shows all the time, and they are relatively simple to convert to HOn3. The width scales out to about 9' - a little wide, but acceptable if one is on a budget and in need of a generic (non D&RGW) HOn3 caboose.

I found this in some shots of the timesaver layout. I really like the look of your end ladders...may need to add some to this little guy. It's one of two items lettered for the Big Tujunga Lumber Company...the other is the water car next to it in the picture.

Also, I think I found a prototype of your caboose in the restored B&O roundhouse, in a recent issue of Trains or Raifan. Perhaps a web search will turn up an image or two. It was a B&O caboose, btw.

Back to the standard gauge caboose -

I painted the roof black, and the grab irons white. I also bent some railings for the platform ends, and scratchbuilt a battery box. I need to add a brakestaff to each platform, and ladders to each end. I also need to add roof grab irons and details. I think I will leave the cast-on brake details under the car. The cost of all those detail parts adds up, and frankly the underbody details aren't that visible. The only reason I have added them to other cars is because they are more visible, or because the original car either completely lacked those details, or because those details were extremely crude.

Thanks, Gary. I am pleased with the way it looks so far. All I am looking for is a cheap, simple caboose that looks well enough. I have a bunch of plastic ladders I bought for another project, so I will probably just use more of those. That is what I uses on the narrow gauge caboose posted above.

I skulk around, looking for reference for just about anything Reading Company. If I stumble on something that is L&NE or LV or CNJ that is camelback, NM-class caboose or little bobber, or a nice photo showing Upstate Pennsylvania countyside, i.e., Tree-covered Pocono/Appalachian Mountains ... the image ends up in one of my "Prototype Reference" files. Then all I have to do is remember I have it ... no mean feat for this ADD-riddled brain! :mrgreen: Big Grin 357

In addition to my Shay, this project has been on the workbench for awhile, so i decided to pull it out and start working on it again.
