A different grass material from Dollar Tree - FiatFan - 09-29-2010

I found these while browsing through our local Dollar Tree.

Bought a package and brought them home to experiment. I cut the edge with a hobby knife.

I then peeled the material back from the styrofoam.

When completely removed, each pellet contains a section of grass about 5 inches long by 2 inches wide.

I glued them around the foundation of Drew's Deere.

The grass almost seems a little too green so I sprinkled some sifted sand and some Woodland Scenics Earth Blend blended turf on top.

Hey look at that! Looks pretty darn good! Your pic with the exacto knife gave me shudders. I cut myself two weeks ago and got six stitches in my index finger. Smile Thanks for the heads up about this cheap but convincing looking product!

The little red exxes are not helpful ... and I was so liking what I was seeing ...

... I wanted to see the dollar tree grass with Drew's Deere! Darn it!

Greg, please note it is Dollar Tree, not Dollar General.

For those getting red X's or are otherwise unable to see all the photos, here are the direct links to the pictures.

Tom, we can see the first three photos in the original post. For the links you just gave, I am getting "Link cannot be found" messages.

Good find there Tom! We've got a Dollar Tree and a couple of similar stores here in town, so I'll have to go check it out!

Re: A different grass material from Dollar Tree - Gary S - 09-29-2010

Okay, can see the photos now. And it does look REAL good! On changing the color, do you think drybrushing some acrylic paint onto may work too?

Re: A different grass material from Dollar Tree - FiatFan - 09-29-2010

Dry brushing would probably work well. Probably better than the sand. Although it was strained and fairly fine, it's still rather coarse.

Since these are from "dollar tree" can I assume these cost only a buck?

Re: A different grass material from Dollar Tree - FiatFan - 09-30-2010

Yes.

One of my sons was checking out at a dollar store and there was an apparent problem with the merchandise. While the cashier was trying to figure it out my son blurted out "I think it's a dollar."

That's really cool. I have to try and remember some of this stuff when I finally get around to building some scenery on my layout.

I think they may be sold in Canada (or at least in Ontario at Dollarama) with the name "Pot Topper" on the package.
