Replacing micro trains wheels with metal wheels - LFDRR - 10-30-2010

Hi guys,

I bought some micro trains trucks with couplers recently (#1037) and tried to replace the wheels with the metal ones from the original trucks but they are extremely tight and don't roll, AT ALL!!!

I've measured the different dimensions and the metal wheels and axles are all different to the micro trains plastic ones. Should I get new metal wheel sets and if so which ones, or is there some way to get the old ones to fit better? I know there's a seating tool for kadee's but not sure about one for micro trains.

All help greatfully received.

Angie

Measure the axle length- For Micro-Trains they should be 0.540 point to point. There are different lenghts for the trucks made by other brands.
0.540 and 0.563 are the most common.

Thanks Woodone

Appears mine are 0.555. Luckily I have a power drill and file. Sorted 2 axles so far, just 2 to go for this wagon.

Will be ordering some more MT trucks this monday so will also order the 33" atlas axles for MT trucks at the same time.

I have heard of these lengths , but I have not run into one of my own YET. Sort of an odd ball one.
Someone always out there throwing you a curve. I think the only people that make this length is FVM, for metal wheel sets.

For what it's worth, BLMA says their wheel sets fit the MTL trucks perfectly. I have some on order; the BLMA wheel sets I have now (that came with their cars) are really good, better than NWSL in my opinion. I dunno yet how they work with MTL trucks, so we'll see. Ric

Just tried this. The BLMA wheel sets (33") work great in the MTL truck frames. They're free-rolling, and there's a LOT less of the back/forth "shimmy".

Hi All:
You may want to consider Fox Valley metal wheels. They come in a variety of wheel diameters (28", 33", & 36") and axel lengths depending on whose trucks you are using....see below. Their pricing is competetive.
