PTLX 1548 - covered hopper - IndyCity - 11-16-2011

months ago I found some pics of a weathered model of a covered hopper.
I have the same Life Like P2K model and i had the wish to weather my model the same way.

The basis model:

two weeks ago I started the weathering wit sep 1 - painting rust with oil color:

today the oil paint was dry enough to do step 2:
covering the old lettering with gray paint

Next step will be a light white/grayish wash to break the luminosity of the colors.

Always cool to see the "step-by-step" progress. Can you show us a photo of the original weathered model that you are using as a guide?

For the patches over the letters, I've always used paint like you did here. Another option I have discovered recently is to use solid color decal film. It all depends on the look you're going after. The paint is going to be a bit rougher looking, while the trim film will be smooth with sharp edges. Both are usable techniques.

Looking forward to more photos! Thumbsup
