I have an older Matua steam locomotive I would like to put a decoder in. It has the old open motor in it and I cant figure out how to isolate it.

...use a nylon screw in place of the metal one and place a thin layer of plastic (model window glazing, old credit card, etc...) between the frame and motor.
The nylon screw can be found at a good hardware store that has bulk fasteners.

Lester: Is the motor the type with a V shaped spring that pushes on the brushes, and there's insulation behind one brush? For this you put insulation behind the other brush as well, cut the wire and wire the decoder into the circuit.

Placing anything as thick as a credit card under the motor can lead to problems with the gears meshing properly. I used a couple of pieces of shrink tubing (the smallest size) on the two legs of the "V" spring and soldered the two decoder leads (gray & orange) directly to the brushes.

This has 2 springs one for each brush the spring hooks to the motor body wraps around a stud/post then to the brush.

One of those springs, makes connection to the motor body. Insulate that one and the brushes will both be insulated, and then, can be directly connected to the decoder.
I would recommend testing the current draw of the motor, to be sure it does not exceed the rating of the decoder . Your local Hobby Shop should be able to help you there.
