Use of police caboose - faraway - 11-21-2012

Athearn has released UP and SP police cabs.
That triggers my question what and how have they been used for?
- Did they replace the standard cab at the train or were they added?
- Did the officers do something/work during the ride or was it just a method of transportation for RR police officers?
- What is so special with a police cab it could not be performed with a "standard" cab?

I did find this explanations <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://espee.railfan.net/sp_rr-police-caboose.html">http://espee.railfan.net/sp_rr-police-caboose.html</a><!-- m --> and <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/89690.aspx">http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/89690.aspx</a><!-- m -->
Is that all about police cabs?

It's pretty much what the links say. There were two major problem areas for pilferage, one where the SP routes ran between San Pedro and Los Angeles, and one along the Arizona border. The biggest problem was with piggyback trailers, since it was easy to get up on the car and cut the locks on the trailer doors if the train was stopped for whatever reason. I think the need for this was a lot less once double stacks became common (since you can't force the doors open if the containers are in the well positions) and the auto racks were fully enclosed. They wouldn't normally be used on locals, just auto racks and intermodals.

Thank you. I see it was not a general procedure but a special program for specific trains on dedicates routes.
