Thanks, Micheal. I'm actually very happy with the way this is coming out, and am looking forward to getting the whole thing completed and running.
More than anything, though, I am looking at Mexican and Guatemalan 3' gauge prototypes, and seeing how I can adapt those into my semi-freelanced layout, considering my prototype locale is very close to the Mexico border and shared much more in common with Mexican narrow gauge than Colorado narrow gauges. Some of the flat roofed low class passenger cars look similar to a few I have seen for the Morenci Southern railway, which were built atop flat cars. And I've always been curious about that "Hinman" coach on the Cumbres and Toltec - knowing it came from Mexico and wondering if it would be fun to kitbash a steel coach like that from a standard gauge car.

Just this past weekend I borrowed my dad's copy of Best's Mexican NG!
Guatemala is my kind of stuff, and not just due to the fantastic steam excursion videos on youtube. The Oahu Railway's four big ALCO 2-8-0s and 180 of their steel boxcars went there after the mainline was abandoned. Naturally, these steel boxcars are essential to modeling the Oahu Railway and after completing the sides of my master, I've been working on re-doing it as a 3D printed master so that it can be done in HOn3 and On3.

I've been slowly getting back into this. After a painting disaster (it was too hot outside to paint - so I had to strip it and wait and start over), things are looking better. I could have done a better job hiding the splices in the saddle tank, but overall I am happy and just want to get this project wrapped up. I have a motor and gears and I just need to add a few wipers on the drivers and trailing truck and things should be running fine.

Here's an update. I was hoping to get more done this weekend. I've added a few more details. And, I have made pickup wipers for all the drive wheels. I can probably add pickups to the trailing truck, but adding pilot truck wipers seems nearly impossible. 8 wheels of electrical pickup ought to be fine. I still have to mount the motor squarely and test run, and after that just a few more details.

I got the motor and gears in, and pickups added to all 6 drive wheels. I put a little lubrication on the moving parts, and put it on the layout for a test. It moved, but it was clear I had some dirty track. So I cleaned track and wheels, and it moved better - actually quite smooth when it was getting good electrical contact. So, I made pickups for the trailing truck, and now it runs MUCH better. The problem is, the way I designed the pickups for the trailing truck, if they apply enough pressure to the backs of the wheels to actually work, the wheels won't turn and instead will just drag. So, I will have to change the design.
But the best part is - the thing runs smooth, and it PULLS. Here is #2 on the 4% grade, easily pulling 6 hopper cars, a water car, and a caboose. The hoppers are all pretty light, but this is a big train for my layout.

Yes Wayne, definitely burly. And the tank style means the capacity to add a lot of weight. There's still room to add more weight, but I am worried about making sure it is balanced, and also questioning whether it is necessary. It already had no problem with a train as long as my layout could handle up a 4% grade.
this has been a rewarding and fun project so far - I really like building and kitbashing locomotives, and I have learned so many techniques that I no longer find the prospect of custom building a locomotive out of plastic daunting. Those rivet decals work excellent, BTW.
I get the feeling that when I get this all done, it will be my favorite Narrow Gauge locomotive on my roster. I envision it would be used as a switcher for the smelter, but I get the feeling I may use it on all kinds of trains

Overweight locomotives were a major liability for the builders...so it makes sense to stop adding weight when you've got all the adhesion required ;-)
I'm curious as to how much it weighs...as I was thinking that it ought to be very, very heavy. How much heavier is it than your 2-8-0? Mind placing them on scales to compare? I'm curious if it is double the weight. We've experienced something similar with loading additional weight into my son's Thomas and James...Thomas has side takes with allow plenty of extra weight while James has no such space.
