HO Freelance Shelf / Switching Layout - getloose - 01-13-2013
Hey guys, new to the forum but not model railroading!
Here you will find the progress on my layout i'm soon beginning. Track plan is finalized, framework will be simple and kept light so its transportable. 1 Foot Wide, by 6 and a Half feet long. Track plan can be seen below.
In terms of how prototypical the operation is, i'm happy with it as well as the track plan.
The area you see middle/left next to the industry im uncertain what i will do there, most likely some walthers kit bashed commercial or industrial buildings.
Ill use DCC for this becuase of my previous layout and motive power. Small 4 axle power.
Last but not least CSX all the way.

Welcome ....project looks good from here . Possible make the other industries something that would involve the ingredients for the main cement company .....or finished goods from the cement plant , or even waste products . You can get a lot of modelling in a 6' HO layout .

Teejay funny you mention having the other industries some how relate to the cement plant, this crossed my mind and i chose to model other industries because i have a couple of background building kits unused. I feel as if it will seem kind of odd with the cement plant and then say, an industry with box cars next door, but i plan to make it some how all come together. Nothing is Completely set in stone yet, other than the cement plan. I love small hoppers and already have a small collection of 2 bay cement hoppers.

Are you using 2x2's and 1x2's , or something heavier ?

Actually i plan on Ripping a 2x16, down to 2x12 and then shortening it to the 6'5''. with quarter inch foam on top. That should be plenty rigid enough. At home it will be sitting on two L brackets, mounted to studs.

lol i said that in the most confusing way, basically i have a 2x12, im cutting it down to to the 6.5 feet, then ill pad the front out with 1x3. Since its actually 11.5 wide. I have thos lumber left over from other projects.

Industries that close would use a trucking company shuttle service instead of rail.
You were wise to avoid using connected industries on your small layout which btw is my favorite type of layout.
. In fact my layout will be 12" x 10'.

I'm always much more creative when designing small layout. Large rooms give me the blank sheet syndrome! And so far, most small layout I've seen had a lot of charm and realism. I suppose it's why ideas I develop on small fictive ISL always end up on the club layout!
@getloose, this cement is starting to look nice.
I'm just curious, you put a lot of high profile structures in front of the layout. Did you thought about mirroring the track plan to put them on the back. It would be easier to operate. However, I'm aware that your actual layout plan use structures to conceal the ends and you want backdrop structure behind.

Another option is a one industry ISL with several production support buildings that receives rail shipments..
I've often thought of doing just that but,with a lumber company with plaining mills,veneer mill,box and pallet factory.Lumber would be moved to the mills or box/pallet factory on company cars and finished goods shipped in boxcars or on flat cars..
