Need to find Lionel and American flyer value info - toomanyhobbies - 03-25-2013

After long thought I decided to sell the Lionel and American flyer trains I have, due to space issued I decided to keep the generic HO and Marklin HO sets I have and let the larger trains go. These trains have been wrapped up in boxes in the attic since 1966 and I doubt I will ever have the time to work with them so its time to let them go to someone who will enjoy them,I am not sure what all I have but have no clue on what they are worth so are there anyone from the Dayton Ohio area that can help me out. If I can get them sold I will have money to buy more Marklin stuff and get it set up and running.

Greenberg makes a buyers guide for trains, most hobby shops sell them and usually keep a Lionel and American Flyer guide on hand for their own use. The guides cost around $20 each so unless you have a lot of stuff I would take them to the hobby shop and give them a couple of $$$ to look up the values. If you are talking the 60's and older you may be sitting on some serious money. Anything newer is pretty much potluck.

The only hobby shop I know of that deals in trains only deals in HO stuff but there is a place about 60 miles south of me that sells Lionel so its time for a road trip, what I have is mid to late 50s to early 60s.

You might see if what you have is selling or listed on Ebay. The true value is what you can sell them for, not what the book says. I have seen items go over book price on Ebay, in fact, I have seen some current items go for more than the MSRP.

I had unwrapped everything about 5 years ago and written down what they were but lost the piece of paper it was written on,I will have to do it again and take pics this time.

Charlie I'm not impyling the book is the final answer, just that is the best starting point to determine their value. As far as E-Bay goes I agree that sometimes you can get more that they are worth. E-Bay is a great place to sell, not so much to buy.

Mike, I knew what you meant, Thumbsup I was just giving him an option that is sometimes easier for some of us.
I know what you mean about buying on Ebay, but if you are patient you can get some buys.

Charlie,The prices you see on e-Bay is far from the real value..The thing with Lionel some is worth mega bucks while some is worth very little and all prices is based on the model's grade.

I highly recommend the book or become a member of LCCA to get better help.
