Car Exchange: Puddlejumper's cars on the Kings Port Division - Ralph - 09-12-2013

Puddlejumper (Dave) sent me two cars as part of the new car exchange.

Included in a Penn Central freight to Kings Port's mid-division Williams Yard are a flat with a Penn Central trailer and a Potomac Line boxcar. The trailer is bound for a postal sorting facility at Kings Port while the PL box is to be set out at GERN for a load of barrels of GERN Journal Flux (which of course, makes journals roll 3% more freely!).

The power is early merger: an clean looking Pennsy GP30 and a GP35 with a partial PC identity.

The flat with the trailer...

...and the boxcar roll by the yard tower...

...and head for the arrival track at Williams.

More to come!!!!!

Awesome! I love seeing my cars on your layout Ralph.

I did forget one important thing, I did not check those cars for reliability and standards. If you have to modify them (wheelsets, couplers) you may do so. I really should have checked them with an NMRA gauge before I sent them out.

Look forward to the next installment.

Dave

They roll beautifully Dave. Thumbsup

Re: Car Exchange: Puddlejumper's cars on the Kings Port Divi - Ralph - 09-15-2013

All right then! After a couple of days at Williams Yard both of Dave's cars are made part of Kings Port & Western extra 562, a run to West Mill where GERN is located. The local, headed by an RS3, is seen emerging from the overpass while a KP&W coal train rolls by on the main.

The Potomac Line car can be seen passing Booms Ready-Mix as it leaves Williams Yard.

Another shot of the boxcar as it leaves Kings Port. You can see the flat car too. The PC trailer was removed at the Yard and hopefully sometime will be seen on the road.

The visiting cars are seen crossing Ulster Ave before they leave town.

Having climbed the grade to Marion the cars can be seen passing Hedberg Aggregates...

...and then roll through more rural scenery.

Next stop: GERN

The local can be seen emerging from the tunnel under the complex. Stay tuned for photos of the Potomac Line box being cut off at GERN

This is showing sights I have never seen on peoples layouts. This is an added benefit.

Re: Car Exchange: Puddlejumper's cars on the Kings Port Divi - Ralph - 09-16-2013

Thanks! Some more action with Dave's cars.... After they clear the tunnel under GERN, the boxcar is cut from the flat so it can be set out with another boxcar at the loading area under the complex.

and they get the shove past the silos to the boxcar docks under the facility.

After the set out, the loco hooks up with the remainder of the train and hauls the flat to West Mill's Float Yard.

The empty flat allows us a look at a passing KP&W blue and orange caboose (the older scheme)

And, after the three remaining cars are separated from it, we can also see the newer orange scheme caboose that was at the back end of our local. The RS3 spots the cars on one of the float Yard tracks for shipment back to Maryland.

Thanks guys! It's been fun for me.

Time to wrap this up and get those cars back to Dave.

There was a two day turn-around on the boxcar at GERN so the flat sat at West Mill's Float Yard until one of the idler cars used by the car float operation broke a wheel. They're old and decrepit so this is not surprising. The Float Master decided to press the Pennsey flat into service for a day:

The next day a Penn Central local to Penvan, just a little to the north of West Mill, picked up the Potomac Line car and then set it out at the West Mill Float Yard. Reunited, the two cars are placed on the float for the beginning of the trip home.

Cars should be in the mail by Friday Dave! Thanks!

Why not? You're paying a per diem on the thing as long as it's on your rails, might as well use it for something!

Thanks Ralph. I really enjoyed seeing my cars on your layout! I have never done anything like this before so it was very satisfying!

Great series, Ralph -- it's worth pointing out that this exchange is open to anyone new who wants to join at any time, just PM me or Mike Kieran.
