a huge spiral and return loop. 9 engines spaced among the 241-243 coal cars.
it sounds less like a typical MRR, and more line rain

If the track work is solid and cars are finely tuned that train could run for months without a derailment.
But,if all isn't up to stuff..

I would counter that by saying that Model Railroading is a broad church and he is enjoying his version of the hobby in his own way.
Take a look at some of his other videos and you will see that he is pushing the boundaries of how long a model train you can make.
Now who amongst us hasnt tried to make the longest train that it was possible to fit on a layout?
My son aged 9, has done the same sort of thing when playing with the ez track and HO trains and ended up pushing the limits of the power pack and track power continuity.
These sort of possibilities are one of the reasons I decided to go with the ez track system when buying model trains that I knew my son would get to play with. The flexibility offered by the system is great for "play and pack up" but also for developing and changing layout configurations. It also offers the same possibilities for ease of change when building more serious layouts.

Of course! I remember doing that as a kid. We had enough cars that the front of the loco could couple back on tot he rear of the caboose if I wanted to. It was fun trying to see which locos could pull that many cars. The Tycos with traction tires, no big surprise. But then some of the other stuff - like the old Tyco 0-6-0, all metal. Or the Flyer HO industrial diesel - also all-metal. The ones without traction tires would slip like crazy but eventually get it moving. Other locos, like a Rivarossi Docksider, had no chance. Light weight and no traction tires.
It was an interesting diversion. After a while I got bored and took off the excess cars and went back to running trains in a more 'normal' fashion, making meets at the passing sidings and dropping off cars at industries. Though my latest layout will be intended for operations, and I don't really have room to build it to handle more than about 10 car trains, you can bet at some point I will link multiple trains just to see what I can pull around the whole thing.
Life is too serious anyway, can't be completely 100% serious at all times in hobby pursuits as well.
