bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - Bigsteel - 02-12-2009 OK,so here is where ill be posting pics of my weathered and detailed locos and rolling stock. first up is a test pic of a bachmann 2-8-0 spectrum that has been perty darn dirtied up as if its been in ALOT of service and is near the end of its years.--josh Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - Trucklover - 02-12-2009 AWESOME Josh!! I love the weathering, Im not much of a steam fan, but id say you did a great job on it Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - Bigsteel - 02-12-2009 thanks josh,my pics kinda show the rust on the tender is still shiny :?: ,the oils i have are not working for me,i guess ill try to go over it with some chalks or gouche.ill have some more pics tomorrow of my new EG-E cars also --josh Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - LynnB - 02-13-2009 Nice start, I know a couple guys that use the chalks and they try not to seal them as they don't usually have to touch them once there on the rails. Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - Bigsteel - 02-13-2009 this engine wont be on rails for a while so i kinda had to seal it.but nonetheless if you just overdo the chalks then dullcote it the chalk still shows through just enough.im starting to use gouche, which is AMAZING wash medium. and it will soon replace oils (that NEVER seem to dry ).thanks.--josh Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - Bigsteel - 02-13-2009 heres another pic of the same engine but different lighting, tell me how it looks: Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - LynnB - 02-13-2009 Looks good enough to ride on my rail line. Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - cnw1961 - 02-13-2009 Looking good . I especially like the tender and the faded lettering. Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - Bigsteel - 02-13-2009 thanks guys, ill try postin more pics of my latest cars tomorrow.you have no idea how much it helps to finish something when you have guys on the gauge who want to see it .--josh Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - jmarksbery - 02-14-2009 Hope you don't mind but perhaps a little cropping and some light may help the photos to show better. Looks great Jim Re: bigsteels weathered engines and rolling stock (1950's era) - nkp_174 - 02-14-2009 She looks fine. Heavily weathered. There is one additional thing I'd recommend, white slop on the boiler around the pop off valves. There was usually some sort of water impurities release in that spot. I don't remember exactly what it was, but I know about it because I noticed the ugly white slop in so many color pictures of heavily weathered steam engines, but never on excursion engines (specifically the 765) and my dad explained that they'd re-pipped the 765 to release down by the track for aesthetic purposes. Of course, if your B&O 2-8-0 operated on a division with a nice water supply, there would be no white slop You are off to a good start.
