Thanks Wayne, I didn't know about sanding the phosphore bronze wire before soldering. I've used it since a few years to make grabirons and feel comfortable working with that material. I'll take a look if I can get supplies at the local hobby shop.

I worked on the frame and pilots today. Not prototypical, but well within the 3 feet rule.

I've got another question. Does anybody know how to mount Kaslo resin truck frames on Atlas locomotive trucks? I've got a set of Kaslo trucks, but I've got not instruction with it. I'm really at loss about it. I never replaced truck side frames in the past.

I mounted the boxcab truck sides on the Bachmann 44ton trucks. The studs fit with some sanding and I glued them in place with CA. Do your replacements fit the original mounting method?

The replacement are just flat. No means to connect them.

Have a look at this guy. He built another model but he had to deal with Kaslo truck side frames too and made them fit to his trucks.

Thanks Reinhard. He went the hard way! M420 trucks are better designed.

Meanwhile I found another tutorial specifically for M420 and I got good results.

Still a lot of details to apply, but works fine so far.

I basically epoxied the Atlas metal pickup plate directly behind the sideframe, then I cut and adjusted the spring and brake gear to fit. Tonight I epoxied new pegs to attach the sideframe on the trucks. No rocket science. My goal was to keep Atlas excellent pickups exactly as they are. I like their solder free plugs, makes removal easier.

Kaslo did a great job with the sideframes. I only wish they had gone a step further to make them fully compatible with Atlas gear. But I understand they must keep the product as standard as possible.

The trucks are now getting primed and I hope to paint them tomorrow morning.

Some update. the unit is painted and about 90% decalled. I'm still trying to figure out how I'll assemble it, but it should be to hard to find out.

I'm not sure if it really looks like a M420, but at least, it looks like a MLW product! 357 Let's call it a perfect model for the 3 feet rule!

BTW, the roadnumber represent the unit that was wrecked in Charlevoix back in 1993 after hitting a rock slide and diving in the St. Lawrence river. Let's hope it won't happen (yet) on the layout!

Not yet, but that locomotive definitely won't stay clean for a long time. I'm thinking about a special treatment.
