This would be a great model - teejay - 03-22-2016 I got this pic from another Forum . I thought what a great addition to a layout , or maybe even a stand alone diorama or mini layout ! I learned that what I thought was a box cab in the foreground , is a covered " steam dummy " , used in the 1800's so as not to scare the horses Raymond Storey's photo. Re: This would be a great model - Steamtrains - 03-22-2016 There is a building in my original hometown in Mexico that is just like this one. I don't know if it served the same purpose, although I suspect it did as my relatives talked of street cars back in the days. It's a massive building made of granite and sits just a block away from the main square. I hope to be able to go there this summer to visit relatives and will try to gather more info. Gus Re: This would be a great model - teejay - 03-22-2016 This picture happens to be an area of New York city ....possible near the docks . Re: This would be a great model - BR60103 - 03-22-2016 Steam dummies ran into the 20th century -- my father remembered one crossing the Niagara River at Fort Erie. The closest thing I know in models is Toby the Tram Engine; used for much the same purpose. Re: This would be a great model - Brakie - 03-23-2016 There's far more modeling information in the picture then first meets the eye. Re: This would be a great model - Tyson Rayles - 03-23-2016 What a depressing scene. Makes me glad I moved from places like that to out in the middle of nowhere. Depressing, but vital to the American economy. America is full of sites like this one, only now the sites are filled with thousands of tractor-trailer rigs serving the same function as those boxcars. From a modeling standpoint, that is a terrific photo! Re: This would be a great model - Brakie - 03-23-2016 MountainMan Wrote:Tyson Rayles Wrote:What a depressing scene. Makes me glad I moved from places like that to out in the middle of nowhere. Yet,NS and CSX handles over 16,000 boxcars a week.. I also notice several Intermodals that's around 12,000'-just over 2 miles long.. Re: This would be a great model - nachoman - 03-24-2016 I'm with Tyson - awesome photo, but I am sure glad I was born when and where I was I'd model this in a second, but want to live like this??... It was considered quite modern and a good place to find work back then. Re: This would be a great model - teejay - 03-25-2016 Mike , you could make it a scene from the Great Depression ....so it would be OK to be depressing ! HA! Great comment. How will people 100 years from now look upon a photo of today? Re: This would be a great model - shortliner - 03-26-2016 Probably as a paradise - since the world seems to be going to Hell in a hand-basket! Re: This would be a great model - Tyson Rayles - 03-26-2016 "HA! Great comment. How will people 100 years from now look upon a photo of today?" Won't be anybody left by then to look back. On the good news side the world will be once again at peace. |
