Branchline power on the Leetown Division - cn nutbar - 01-23-2018

Leetown certainly owes it's existence to the development of railroads in the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario.Strategically located in the middle of the "Golden Horseshoe" with direct mainline connections to railroads in the United States at Detroit and Buffalo it quickly became an important division point of the Canadian National Railway. Also numerous sub-divisions start in Leetown including the Allandale,Hagersville,Dundas,Halton and the very important Elora Gorge sub with connections to the Erie Northshore and EG&E railroads. Many of Leetown's inhabitants work on the railroad in the shops and operating crews making it a true railroad town. It's great for local rail-fanners as all types of power can be found at Leetown from mainline "big power" to smaller but just as important branchline and switcher locomotives. Here's a sampling of typical branchline locomotives.

CNR K3B Pacific (4-6-2) #5588 was ideally suited for branchline service on the Leetown Division. This class of locomotives were used in both freight and passenger service but they were preferred on passenger runs as they were fast with 73" drivers and could easily make their schedules inspite of numerous stops and starts at the many towns along the branchlines

Mikados (2-8-2) were also a common sight on the various branchlines around Leetown especially on the Elora Gorge sub-division with heavy trains originating from the Bowyer GERN Mine. They were regularly used in helper service on the Stoney Creek incline. Here's S1A #3229 assisting on a heavy freight up the grade towards Beeton.
