Re: Freelance 2018-1 - faraway - 03-11-2018

I had a very relaxed Sunday morning.
The circle around the room over the hatches was temporary closed and i ran two heavy Genesis SD60 with some cars multiple times over each staging yard track in both directions. The test completed without derails Smile The Atlas #4 switches and the above table mounted switch machines are not great but they are functioning after some adjustments. Lets wait how the long time reliability will be.
Finally I took a chair and sat in front of the staging yard and added all the missing ties at the track intersections, cleaned the tracks and vacuumed the staging yard.
That phase is completed and most of the furniture etc. can be moved back in position next week.

I did the hatches today. Using copper plated PCB is an excellent base for soldering. The right rail has a jointer just on top of the gap and it worked perfect. Cut it just a tad to the rail end and it is still perfect stable. Looks lousy but works very good even the cut is about 45°. I will put some gray paint on it later.

And than starts the fun part 2285_ This is version 0.01 of the very first draft track plan. It is great fun to "plan" with actual tracks and switches using thumbtacks.

I may need to go to the basement for some more engines and cars for better "planning" 357

Nice to see the next version starting to take shape ... looks great! (And nice soldering too!)

Really like your bridge over the hatch. It's so K.I.S.S.!

Google streetview images laminated on foamboard are a fast way to get an impression of the space available and the dimensions of planned buildings.

It was one of my goals to use the 60cm depth to have background building with a depth larger then 1 to 10cm only as done before so often. It is often necessary due to space restrictions but I did never really like it and scarified therefor some extra space for the buildings.

Why not remove the track that the 2 boxcars are on, extend the building out towards the track that the single boxcar is on and use that track?

Two different customers that do not want to get their cars moved while loading due to activities of the other customer.
Like here <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.google.de/maps/place/Miami,+FL,+USA/@25.8280967,-80.2544278,194m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x88d9b0a20ec8c111:0xff96f271ddad4f65!8m2!3d25.7616798!4d-80.1917902">https://www.google.de/maps/place/Miami, ... 80.1917902</a><!-- m --> Salco and Auto Plus had their own tracks (Auto Plus is abandoned). I think that is a very common track layout for industries.

Scott,If I may? That is the normal in the box modeler thinking that has been taught throughout the years but,in reality I truly doubt if my company would have been happy to pay my hourly scale while NS switched another business. Moving cars, spotting cars and re-spotting cars takes time up to 30-45 minutes due to operating rules and safety rules that must be followed..

Gotcha

Brakie Wrote:Scott,If I may? That is the normal in the box modeler thinking that has been taught throughout the years
Only made that suggestion because he was talking about having buildings with more depth

1.st Street

2.nd Street

1.st Avenue. Only the East bound lane is on the layout. A US standard 19' road would fit in the space but that is a residential road not matching the theme. Anyhow most street in Westgate are remarkable narrow. I miss the sidewalks of Vernon. They were a nice detail of the streets. Westgate has gravel and dirt shoulders. Road marks are also very sparse or mostly none at all.

Today is a ballsat day. I usually start with little ballast and add more later as required. That is easier than removing surplus ballast.

ps. The yard office from BLMI is the only survivor of the big building cleanup. I love it for it's simplicity and the perfect balanced proportions.

New building at the very east end facing 1.st St. Will do the roof tomorrow and have to learn how to add 3D details to Streetview wallpapered foamboard.
