Greetings, gang.

Cloudy and 64 headed for less cloudy and the mid 80s. Possible rain this weekend.

Actually got some fall projects done yesterday. Work will continue on one later today. Otherwise not much going on in the world headquarters of the Backyard & Southern Rwy.

Charlie - thanks for the tip on the corn.

Don - Omaha Nebraska has had a similar plan for decades. Dodge Street is a major access route to downtown with a center lane that reverses direction each weekday morning and evening. Seems to work well for them.

All stay safe.

Tom

Good morning all, yet another 110 day in store, or close, then we drop to the mid-90's by Friday with some decent chances of rain. I say, "or close" because the forecasts are always all over the map and the TV folks seem to hit it closer that the Internet apps do. Big storm up in Bullhead City, flooding, power poles snapped in two and a real mess. Bullhead City is across the river from Laughlin, NV, kind of a mini-Las Vegas. We have so many casinos here I wonder why anyone goes to Vegas just to gamble, we also have some big-name entertainers there as well.  A few years ago, one of the Indian tribes traded for some land near the Cardinals football stadium, then declared it as part of their reservation. After a few years of court battles (mostly with other tribes), they now have a huge casino/hotel right in town.

Tom, we have had one reversible lane street in Phoenix for decades that has worked well. Some folks are questioning the wisdom of putting a double lane one on a major freeway, why not just add one lane in each direction they ask. Don't really care, I do my best to avoid that freeway if I can, normally folks treat it like the Autobahn. The last time I was on it heading to Sedona, I was being pushed by traffic and saw that I was going over 90 and cars were passing me like I was an old lady. Icon_e_surprised A few miles later I was crawling along almost to a stop. That's I-17 north of the Phoenix area, hurry up and wait... Oh yeah, you can always count on some major rollover or a jackknifed truck blocking both lanes with a 20-mile backup.

Just one appointment today, but an important one, I get to know the results of the CT scan I had last week and if I need to go back for some touch-up work. Might try to hit Costco later today. I was told the best time to go there is late afternoon, and they're right. Good parking and easy checkout. Everyone seems to want to go early in the day, or right after work.

Enough for now, take care, have a great day and stay safe...

Good morning folks

It is 66 and not raining. Going up to 73.

At least it is not raining. According to the weather service we got about an inch of rain although I will debate that. The Schuylkill River is still up. At 1 PM yesterday it was topping one of the cofferdams. Here are before and during photos.

Since I was soaked when I got home even though the rain ended around noon I did not get much done around the house and I did not make it to therapy. Later in the evening I did enter some new rolling stock into my inventory program.

Today not much is planned. I may try to get to the rolling stock sitting on the layout.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Sun and 75 today. It was cloudy all weekend. Now that the holiday is over the sun returns to us.
In the past....We had a local travel agency that specialized on Vegas trips. They filled a plane twice a week from Detroit.
Give the waitress a good tip and they were always nearby with drinks. Now you're lucky to find one.
Buffets were 2 or 3 dollars and steak and eggs after midnight was 99 cents.
Been to Laughton twice, but it's not Vegas. No other place is Vegas.
We stayed home over the holiday but did have a good meal of ribs and homemade tater salad.

Have I mentioned the light bulb I got from Costco? It's an LED rated at 80 watts -- actual, not equivalent. 8000 lumens, equivalent to 5 x 100W bulbs.

It's not subtle. But it lights up the unfinished part of the basement. 5 parts, 4 wings that can be folded up. It won't go in a fancy lamp. This one also has 2 dimmer settings. Some of us are getting on and our eyes need all the help they can get.

When Costco ran out of the originals, another store had a lesser bulb for a slightly higher price. The Costco one is about $25 Cdn.

Costco gas is down to $1.42 per liter.

Good morning folks

It is 64 and pleasant. High will be 79. We had rain showers most of the evening which were not foretold.

I had to make a semi-emergency run to the pharmacy when I got home yesterday. One of my wie's medication finally came in and she was down to the last drop. Not much else went on other than cleaning the Guinea pigs' cage.

I did add screws to the coupler pocket and metal wheels to an Athearn blue box boxcar.

This afternoon is the last therapy before I see the orthopedic doctor. I have my doubts therapy did much of anything. I think in most cases it aggravated things. Depending on how I feel after putting the trash and recyclables on the curb will determine if I do anything with all the rolling stock sitting on the layout. This trash is the first since the summer twice a week stopped which means more trash. Also due to Labor Day our recyclables pick up day was pushed back from Wednesday so that means more recyclables.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Greetings, gang.

It's a hazy 68 degrees outside my window this morning. Supposed to get to the upper 80s this afternoon.

I finished up a couple of fall projects yesterday and need to do a couple more. Only item on the agenda for this morning is to get the lawn mowed. Leaves are starting to come down but nothing major yet. Getting a few acorns this year after not getting any last year. This year's crop is nothing compared to some years when I took out somewhere between 200 and 300 pounds of acorns. This evening's beer and bereavement will be a little different from the usual fare. The town is having it's annual Cy-Hawk day. It's a friendly street party held on the Thursday before the rivalry football game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. Food, drink, and souvenirs typical of a small town fair.

All stay safe.

RE: The Hobo Camp Fire Is going well #IX.. Stop In!!! - ezdays - 09-08-2022

Good morning all, Thursday already, unbelievable how fast this year is going, I just turned the calendar to September and it's already 1/4 gone.

Our, "excessive heat warning" expired last night, today we're in the low 100's, tomorrow, low 90's, maybe some rain this weekend.

Very good news yesterday, my leaking stent has healed itself. The doctor says there was a 50-75% chance that it would, and for a change, the odds were in my favor, so no more surgery for now. I get another CT scan in six months,  but now I'm free to do what I want. To be sure, he wants me to get back to being active. Me too....

Wasn't aware that they made LED bulbs with 8000 lumen output, but why not. I have two 3000 lumen 4' florescent replacements and they light up my two-car garage.

Not much change in gas prices here, a few stations down a few pennies, a few more up a few. Still have that one station a few miles north of here on US60 that wants $4.99 for regular. I think I'd push my car a few miles before giving them the pleasure of gouging folks.

Take care, stay safe and prayers for those in need....

RE: The Hobo Camp Fire Is going well #IX.. Stop In!!! - Charlie B - 09-08-2022

Good Afternoon.
It was a beautiful day today, no rain and low humidity so I got the paint on the cab of the motorhome. It's far from new but looks good for a 1981.

Yesterday the weather was iffy so I made a canopy for the rear door from some metal I had left from my roofing job. It turned out pretty nice and we should be able to hang it next week.
My back and legs are killing me, I am not used to work.
Don, I am glad to hear the stent has healed itself.

Gas prices are steady here around 3.50 a gallon. They will probably hold until the election is over.

I am heading for a shower and a long nap.

Cheers
Charlie

RE: The Hobo Camp Fire Is going well #IX.. Stop In!!! - tompm - 09-09-2022

Good morning folks

It is a cool 64 with lots of sunshine. High is supposed to be 81.

I got dinner made, went to therapy, and got the trash and recyclables out to the curb. Considering how bad my back felt when I got home that was quite an accomplishment.

Didn't get any train time in.

This weekend with good weather means more gardening. I need to trim the weeping spruce. There are bushes in the backyard that need trimming and shaping. And of course the never ending weeding needs to be done. Inside there is some heavy duty floor cleaning to do. Not sure what else will be brought up by management. Now that I have my car back I do need to find a carwash so I get the week's worth of dust and mud off of it.

I plan to enter some more new rolling stock into my inventory program. I also want to start tuning up the backlog of rolling stock sitting on the layout.I would like to run some trains while I am at it.

I hope everybody has a good day.

RE: The Hobo Camp Fire Is going well #IX.. Stop In!!! - FiatFan - 09-09-2022

Greetings, gang.

Sunny now headed for cloudy later. Rain chances start tonight and run through tomorrow night with a possible one inch total. Somewhat disappointing as late as yesterday they were prediction a possible 2 inches or more.

Quiet day yesterday. Got the yard mowed and that's about it. This morning I've already been to the grocery store and also got the propane tank filled. Gas price is down this morning to $3.44 after last night's $3.49.

Don - glad to hear all is going well.

Charlie - nice work on the camper. Looks really good.

Tom - I hope you can soon find a solution for your back problems.

All stay safe.

Tom

Good Morning all
We have a beautiful day here and I went out and took the tape and paper off the motor home, put the mirrors on it and then when I went to move it it had a dead battery. That isn't a big surprise because it hasn't been driven to keep the batteries charged.  I'll charge it enough to get it started and moved out of the middle of the drive way. Once parked in the right place I will put a good slow charge in both batteries.

My big plans today are to take a photo for the weekly photo thread and catch up on my rest. I may continue typing a list of the freight cars that were in my friends collection that I bought.  There were a few that are duplicated so I will eventually renumber them. As for doing anything worthwhile I may mow grass but I just have a feeling if I do anything it will be a major disaster.

Tompm, I hope you can get things straightened out. My trip to the chiropractor last week was successful so my ribs are healing well.

Don, you are late reporting in today. I hope all is well.

Tom of the Fiats, is there any news about your grand daughter? I am keeping her in my nightly prayers.

        Have a great day everyone.

        Charlie

Son of a gun, I thought I had posted earlier, poof, disappeared and now I can't remember what I said. It was probably too much anyway. Just a busy day today, too many appointments. I am doing minimally better but some of my symptoms can last a few more weeks. I'm making an effort to get more active and get that cycle to help me back to normal...

Temps today should be in the mid to low 90's. There's a hurricane heading up the Mexican coast and should give us some rain this weekend and some flooding in California.

Charlie, great job on the RV, looks professional. And thank for your concerns, must have hit "preview" instead of "post"...

Take care everyone and get ready for a relaxing and fun weekend...

Sun, 85 today. Mayhaps some rain tomorrow night.
Tomorrow is club night, first official one of the 22/23 season.
Did some grocery shopping this morning. Prices have gone up so much you have to bend over and take one for the team when you check out.
Gas seems to be holding @ $3.89.

RE: The Hobo Camp Fire Is going well #IX.. Stop In!!! - BR60103 - 09-09-2022

Charlie:
We had a big knife switch installed on our motor home battery. We disconnect it when we leave it to sit a bit.
The last time we had a dead battery was when we sat in a campground for 3 weeks and left the GPS plugged into the lighter. Fortunately, we have a switch to get power from the house battery.

Yesterday we pulled up to the mailbox kiosk. Dayle said "there's Ed's car". Then we saw Ed lying on the sidewalk. I went over to him and saw blood drops. But he was conscious. He'd tripped and fallen on his front and it looked like driven his glasses into his forehead. We managed to get him sitting up. He didn't want 911 called, or any other fuss. With another guy to help, we got him on his feet and into his car. He drove home and shut the garage door.
We called subdivision management and they called his son. I hope he's still talking to us.
