Removing Glue? - LiveSteamer - 12-06-2023
Ok Guys, I bought a SW9 the other day at the local hobby shop and a shell off of Ebay for the SW9. My problem is that the SW9 shell has a metal tube glued down for the forward facing light. What home remedy can I use to remove the glue without damaging the shell at all or what store bought chemical can be used? I thought about just using a set of plyers but I don't want to break the shell as I can't find another one in the color scheme that it is in.

Assuming the shell is plastic, and not knowing what kind of glue was used, I think I'd probably try to cut it off rather than undo the glue. A picture would help. I have a saw blade that goes into my X-acto knife, something like that might work. Take a photo and let us see what you're up against.

Don, here is what I am dealing with. Yes the shell is plastic. It kind of looks like a super glue as it is too thick to be model testors glue.

Matt, Not knowing what kind of glue I would try to get lucky and soak the shell in water overnight. It might be a water soluble glue. I got lucky like that once.

I might give that a try Charlie. It is frustrating because just that little piece is causing the shell to not go over the motor and frame.

If it is super glue, acetone would work, but it could soften the shell. That's a lot of glue, I think I'd still try to cut it off, even an X-acto knife, but I can see where that would be difficult. One other suggestion would be to grind the tube off to the point where it doesn't interfere. Good luck.

OK. I did try the water trick but that didn't work. I want to try to cause as little damage as possible. I will give that a try with cutting it out now. All this to get the frame and motor in. Next step after getting all this done is to remove the lettering and number, then apply the decals for the C&I ( Cambria & Indiana Railroad ) and put it into service under the tree lol.

Well I got the piece out now. I got a set of needle nose pliers and moved it side to side and it broke free. Now to sand the glue down and get the shell on it. lol
