RE: Current Projects - LiveSteamer - 02-23-2024 Here we have an almost complete ( fictional ) C&I Gondola. All that needs done is a number picked out and a built date added. I am also in the process of scratch building my very first project. It is a dock added to the parts building that is assembled. I did start painting the structure until I wanted to add a loading dock from trackside. It's my first attempt so it might not be pretty. I have another piece cut out for the roof over the dock and post already cut to go into place. I do have to make a trip to the hobby shop to get more material. RE: Current Projects - LiveSteamer - 02-23-2024 Went to the hobby shop today and got the supplies that I needed to continue building the loading dock and then some lol. I also picked up a kit that will replicate additional houses being built for the C&I employees and the mine employees. I could only find one of these kits but plan to get a couple more. It does look like all the pieces are there as everything was still attached. I pretty much have all the railroad cars and locomotives lettered and number so now it's time to move towards the structures. After I get a decent amount of structures completed it will be on to the trees. RE: Current Projects - LiveSteamer - 02-23-2024 Just a small update. I went and got chalk tonight and started to get the mortar filled in. I just used basic chalk from the store and at first it didn't work until I wet it a little bit and then it stuck. I left it dry to see if it would fall out but it is holding its own. I then went through the pieces and found an outhouse that is included with the set so that got put together. RE: Current Projects - jim currie - 02-24-2024 Matt i use a styrene sheet of either cut random stone or cinder blocks as a base for small docks. You can also use scale lumber to build supports but i think stone or blocks add a impression of longevity. Jim RE: Current Projects - tompm - 02-24-2024 The mortar came out looking good. I remember that kit. I had it on my layout when I was a kid. I have no idea what happened to the houses. I have no idea what happened to the houses. Thank You Tom. The houses are going together rather quick and easy. I have two of them nearly finished and are drying from being glued together. I am working on the Arlee Station kit that I'm turning into a C&I station. I also picked up the A.H.M Grusom Casket kit as well but that will be used for something else railroad related. Jim I can see what you are saying. I was thinking like how my dad would scratch build certain and then paint them with the detail on them. I know it is a task to do so but it is something I do want to try and if it doesn't turn out, then I will take a different approached lol. Next time though I am going to get different material and try the way you suggested. RE: Current Projects - cnrglen - 02-25-2024 Hi Matt, DPM had masonry loading docks as part of their modular system. If you could find a pack that would save you some trouble of fabricating it. Also there are many ways to re-create motar on brick. I've used wall spackle. Just rub it into the motar lines, wait for it to dry and rub the exxess off. My other go-to is to paint the entire structure in the motar color and then dry brush the brick in several different shads of brick color. Now that is something different, wall spackle. I might have to give that a try also. RE: Current Projects - LiveSteamer - 02-25-2024 Well I had a busy weekend. I managed to get a few of the projects under way or completed. The new station is complete and is now tucked safely away in a box with the mine, and houses that are under construction. The Grusome Casket building is nearing completion as well. I have a few things to paint and it will be ready to go with the other buildings until a later date or if I feel like setting up and running on the kitchen table lol. RE: Current Projects - LiveSteamer - 02-25-2024 A couple more..... Matt scratch building /kit bashing is the most enjoyable part of modeling for me that way you don't end up with the same structures as a lot of other layouts just look through my posts to see how rewarding it can be. Jim RE: Current Projects - LiveSteamer - 02-27-2024 Ok now here is a question, what size and thickness of polystyrene would I need to get to scratch build a building? I'm going to need to build the car shop and engine house for the C&I and I'm not exactly sure on the thickness I need to build the buildings. I'm going to need to build the car shop and engine house for the C&I and I'm not exactly sure on the thickness I need to build the buildings. That is where I am at right now and I see there is different thickness. I was thinking about the thickest sheet to make the car shop and engine house out of. RE: Current Projects - Charlie B - 02-27-2024 Matt If there is a local company to you that makes signs or other products from styrene sheets you might be able to buy a large sheet from them I bought 4x8 feet sheets from a supplier in Youngstown and they just rolled it loosely so it would fit in my car. I got 3 different thickness the heaviest is about 1/16 in thick (I forget the exact millage) but it is perfect for buildings and everything I need it for and it is nice to have some in stock when I need it. Jim is right though about Evergreen, they have brick, lap siding, shingles, stone and any thing else you may want. Charlie |
