ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - ezdays - 05-30-2024 This is a kickoff to our first challenge in a while. My goal is to take the log cabins that I built a while ago and make a historical park to place them in. I have three structures that can go there, a log cabin, a log ranger station and a two-hole outhouse. I plan on having a chain link fence, a parking area and I'm not sure if I have room for much more. Going to play it by ear as I go. RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - ezdays - 06-01-2024 Right now, all I can do is to plot out a general area where the new park will go. We need to get the land grant, all the permits and then a ground-breaking ceremony by town officials, which might take a few weeks to get done. Which is good, because I have a project that I'm working on right now that might take that long to finish. In the meantime, I will prepare to get contractor estimates and write contracts for materials. The park will be next to the train station and we'll need permission for access, otherwise the town will need to build a road and cross some tracks. Just think about everything we need just to do a small project like this. Here's a few shots of the proposed location RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - TMo - 06-01-2024 Didn't realize the bureaucracy in Arizona was that bad! Permits on a model railroad...?. At least they're not taxing rain out there like our governor did about 10 years ago.... At least they're not taxing rain out there like our governor did about 10 years ago....It's state trust land and not easy to transfer, so we may get a 100-year lease for a dollar a year with an option to buy. The town still is going to require building permits to make sure we are up to code. We're fortunate that we will not be required to join an HOA since the log cabin is residential, but we got around that by adding a ranger station/museum/gift shop, making it commercial. RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - jim currie - 06-01-2024 don't forget the title insurance. Jim RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - ezdays - 06-02-2024 Jim, title insurance is not necessary since this is a land grant. Just to be sure, I checked with our governor, but she was too busy getting ready for the campaign trail to take time for us common folk. The first load of material arrived even though it won't be needed for a while. It's the chain link fencing. It arrived in 140' rolls, and, of course, they unrolled it already. It will be moved to our storage area until needed. What I found was that they actually used a huge grease splatter screen (available at Walmart in up to 150' diameter N scale). and cut it in 6' strips. Clever little guys, except that they forgot to deliver the poles. RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - ezdays - 07-28-2024 Guys, I have a confession, right now I'm really not up to working on my challenge. I'm limping along (literally) and it's not working. I've been dealing with a medical issue for almost a year now, I'm doing better, just not there yet. I don't have the mental desire or stamina to stand hunched over to work on my layout, I should have chosen a category where I could do it sitting down, but even then, I can't be sure. Getting old sucks at times, everything takes longer, especially recovering from medical issues. As they say in the TV series, "Alone", I am officially tapping out.... Fear not, there will be other challenges, this one, I'll finish when I'm able to. RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - TMo - 07-28-2024 Sorry to hear you're suffering Don. When I hear stories like yours my own inability to dedicate time to the challenge seems like a pretty thin excuse. I haven't officially thrown in the towel on my own layout addition, but I really can't see how I'm going to get to the finish line before time expires, and that's with (knock on wood) no major ailments. I did love the idea of a park, and the fence idea was pretty brilliant. We will look forward to when you do (eventually) finish the park. You know I have the same problem but with different issues so my modeling ground to a halt. I am however mentoring a new comer to the hobby and together (him doing the actual work for the most part and me providing the knowledge) we are building a diorama to give him a taste all forms of model building. RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - Charlie B - 07-29-2024 Don, I am sorry to hear of your issues. I agree that getting old is not as grand as we would like it to be. I did not join in the challenges for much the same reasons. You know how to reach me so keep in touch. Sometimes a chat can be a real upper. That goes for everyone here. Charlie RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - tompm - 07-29-2024 Don Sorry to hear about your troubles but I fully understand. They didn't quite explain the recovery process or time from the hernia surgery I had a couple of moths ago. I hope you will feel well enough soon to get back to doing the things you love. RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - LiveSteamer - 07-31-2024 Don, Sorry to hear that you are having trouble. Hope you do get better soon and can get back to the project. Remember to take it one day at a time and try not to overdue it. I know at times that is probably hard, but you have a lot of friends here that care about you. RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - ezdays - 08-01-2024 Thank you all for your understanding and well wishes. What I said is spot on, I don't care if it's cleaning up, building something, getting ready in the morning, healing from a paper cut or recovering from an illness, it takes a lot longer the older you are. I've said many times, I can do a lot of what I used to do, it just takes longer and hurts more. I know my limits and I feel it when I try to exceed them. I am doing a bit better, I just don't think that it's wise to push myself to work on things that I'd like to do but I know I shouldn't right now. There's always the next challenge and I should be ready for it by then.... RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - Tyson Rayles - 08-05-2024 Good to hear you are feeling a little better, hope you continue to improve. My best wishes for a speedy recovery Don ! RE: ezdays' layout addition '24 build challenge - nachoman - 08-05-2024 Don - Even starting is an accomplishment in itself. And while I am much younger than you, I can tell you my modeling enthusiasm went down the tubes when I started needing glasses. Things that I used to do regularly (such as apply grab irons) suddenly became a real pain in the butt. Glad to hear you are feeling a little better. And even though you didn't finish, I can tell you that that splatter screen idea is going to come in real handy for me! |
