Brooklyn 1st Ave waterfront

Chippin away, almost have all the track laid out. Had to realign some yard tracks which brought the track closer to the edge of the layout then I'd like. I'm curious if I'll get a switch machine in that space but we'll see.

That most right track is very much at the edge. You love the risk...... ?

Haha no I'm not very comfortable with it that close to the edge at all. I'm contemplating either going from 4 tracks down to 3 or putting up a Plexiglas border which I don't really want to do but I might have to

Edit: now that I think about it I might change out the wye, that's taking up what I think is enough space to bring the track further away from the edge of the layout

I think that the Y looks as if it's increasing the space. To me, it also looks like a kink at the left side of the Y.

I have a switch machine problem where a track runs directly above an L-girder with only a 1" board separating the girder from the Homasote.

In model railroading, there are between six and two hundred ways of performing a given task.
Most modellers can get two of them to work.

The wye does have a slight kink, I'm going to try to figure out a way to use a regular turnout instead of the wye. That's probably my best bet.

I had a 4" plexiglas boarder at my last layout. It worked perfect.

Yeah, you really need to get that kink with the wye fixed. I would try to find someway to get the track moved further from the edge not only for saving on the cost of the plexiglass but also so you have room for some scenery to finish up the looks of the edge of the layout.

To make everything fit and have reliable operation down the road the wye is removed and so is the subway car un/loading ramp. It would have been nice to include but if something has to get removed, that's the most logical.

I tried out water scenery sheets, they look good in photos not so much in person. I don't have a lot of water surface so I think these will be fine for now. I can always try another method later on if I want to.

I can confirm. It looks very good on the photo. It has the right color for harbor water.

These are from scenerysheets.com and I think it redirects you to Amazon and that's where I ordered them from.

I finished laying all the track and spent most of the weekend testing it out, running trains and switching cars around. I'm pleased with how it turned out. I've added 2 blue point switch machines and I like how they operate and how reliable they are, just gotta install 24 more. The carfloat is still unasssembled because I'd like to figure out a way to fasten it to its hinged benchwork without gluing it down just in case one day I decide to change the water. Here's some over view photos of the progress.

Facing 180° from the above photo will be the engine house. The track to right will be the lead on to 1st avenue towards Sims and the South Brooklyn Railway interchange and the track to the left will be an abandoned industrial lead.

Following 1st Avenue will be Yi Pin and East Peak Trading
[Image: 20180611_081500_zpsfqopnble.jpg]

Next is Atlantic Waste Services. When I run NY Cross Harbor and NYNJ engines they'll receive boxcars for bailed garbage but when I run the B&G engines they'll get MSW containers on flat cars.

Also on 1st will be Franklin Polymers.

The team tracks will be Midwood Lumber and outbound waste oil by Safety Kleen (NY Cross Harbor/NYNJ) and Bass Oil (B&G). I'm also going to add the NY Cross Harbor caboose on the left most team track where the tank car is that was used as a yard office and is still currently there.

The carfloat lead

And lastly the 1st avenue track towards the interchange with LIRR and NY&A

Not much of an update but I mocked up the engine house and a warehouse for East Peak and Yi Pin. I tried to make the engine house as close as I could to the space I have. The warehouse isn't accurate for either customers nor is it located on 1st avenue but it's right off 1st avenue and the siding doubled as the lead to Franklin Polymers. Also not accurate to the oil loading platform located at Bush terminal but I built one from the Walthers loading rack kit.
