3-D printing results
#1
Hi all - been awhile since I posted here. Twin babies have kept me quite busy (and quite broke!) for the past year and a half.

Lately my modeling has been in front of a computer screen - drawing things up to be 3-D printed. I can do that inside at a desk while the babies sleep or play, whereas it's not as easy to get time in my workshop. I have had some success printing things on Shapeways, and here is my latest result:

It's an HOn3 hopper I drew up based upon some others I had scratchbuilt following a 1958 article in Model Railroader. The print came out excellent, and the assembly was easy.

WOW!! Eek

That is impressive, Kevin! Worship

Other than the metal details, how much assembly was involved? I'm also curious about the cost, but don't wish to be too nosy - is it comparable to that of good quality r-t-r stuff, such as is available from the likes of Tangent or Blackstone? And, does the price come down much (or at all) if you order multiples of the same item?

That car costs about $23 us to print, and it prints as one piece. Qualitly of the print doesnt quite match injection molding but for a wood car like this it works. IMO it costs a little more than i hoped. I think i spent about 3 hours putting the details on. Unfortunately there are no discounts for multiple orders.

That price doesn't sound too bad at all, especially if one needed a number of identical cars which weren't otherwise commercially available or at least at a reasonable price. Most craftsman-type kits are $40.00 and up, sometimes considerably up! I remain impressed - nice work, indeed!

That would be about 1/2 price for me! Smile G scale cars run around $50 to $60

That looks Great!!!!

Are you ready to print one of those hoppers in 1:22?

I'm game if so.

Well, I think the size would be greater than the maximum size going through shapeways…  Also, the bigger the item gets, the bigger the price.  I may make a standard gauge version, and an On3/30 version... but 1:22 might not be doable the way I have this currently designed.

I understand.  Too bad, I like the design. Maybe I can find similar plans and build it from styrene and wood.

I have no idea how to start this, but I am wondering about 3D printers. I was trying to get some small parts on E-bay that were made by Kemtron quite a few years ago. They were an axle kit for the Aerotrain coaches. There were 3 listings (same seller) 2 for 4 kits and 1 listing for 5. These sold for 79 cents a pack, but I really thought I needed them so I placed a max bid of 25 bucks on each one. I quit when they got well over 40 to 50 dollars plus 7 bucks shipping. That much money would go a long way to buying a 3D printer and because the parts are so small they should not be costly to make.  I would only need to print the sideframes with the bearing on it and they are single axle bogies. I am wondering if there is such a thing as a 3D scanner that would scan these parts and convert to the appropriate program to print them.
I can see a good use for tiny parts that I need and these parts I need for the aerotrain are about the size of a nickle.
Any comments and recommendations are welcomed as well as needed
