Gidday Charlie, the diesel locomotives are Kiwirail Class DXC which are upgraded versions of the Former New Zealand Railways DX class which were GE built U26C model which were a narrow-gauge version of the U23C. The DXCs had their air intakes modified so as to haul trains through the 5.3 mile 1 in 33 grade Otira tunnel which had previously been electrified. Here’s a link to more information on the DX class.

Yeah, Wayne, virtually straight out of a tunnel, over a curved bridge, then into a reversed curve, with two grade changes, in a narrow alpine valley, what’s not to like!!
