weathering practice

Here are some hoppers that I have weatherd. I tried several different techniques on these trying to experiment with different effects.

They look good, Sarge. I especially like the rust around the seams in the first pic, and the highly faded "WISCONSIN CENTRAL" in the second pic.

Sarge-Nice job on the weathering. FYI-in the Jan. issue of Railroad Model Craftsman the is an article on weathering those types of hoppers.

Here's the question - why do the photos come up as little red x's? I'd love to see what's up.....

WC cars are my favorites...especially the second car. Very nice job. I'd vote for a little more deep red or brown on the rust to indicate an area of rust that's older and more established. But that's just a little recommendation. Overall, I think you did great.

Just a few days ago I saw some old Southern hoppers (part of a longer NS train going through south Charlotte) weathered exactly like that second WC. The letter paint was almost completely gone making the car look like it had been white-washed or sun bleached. So your's are really good looking and definitely true to the prototype.

Thank you for the comments all. I liked the WC cars the best as well. I used several different washes, pastel powders, and paint markers for the dirt/rust. To fade the lettering I used a wet piece of 1500 grit sand paper and lightly sanded until I got the effect I was looking for.

Herc thanks for the tip about the rust streaks. This was my first attempt at those. My main goal here was to get a decent looking care with out adding to much weathering.

Just my very humble opinion and to be taken for what it is worth, which is really next to nothing...

I think something is missing, I think they could use a little more weathering in certain spots and look a little dirtier around the bottoms and the trucks.

...but what do I know, I've yet to weather any rolling stock. 35

I like the WC cards too. The faded letters are nicely done. The vertical streaks make a lot of sense to me.

The photos are presented as externally linked from photobucket. Your browser settings, network settings, or other preferences may prevent your system from loading them. I have this problem with some photos - and sometimes they appear as the red X, other times, there's no indication that there is even anything there.

If possible, try to log on from another computer (work, home, library, etc) with different settings, or try a different browser to see if that makes a difference.
