Canadian National H6 class 4-6-0 photos wanted
#16
Hi Guys, Here is a few more of the 1533 photos that I've dug up. Someone sugested that I should put together a book on her. Maybe if I get a few more in service in Canada photos and if you guys are willing to let photos of your models get published, I may just try to do it. Then again, I just want to get my models finished and running! Have fun - David

The CN 4-6-0's are some pretty snazzy tea kettles, But I have to say that I prefer the ones that look more like this....[Image: cnj-s777ark.jpg]

Howdy;
Can't go wrong with a CNJ 4-6-0 camelback! Thumbsup Shame the 777 was cut up in mid over-haul. The layout I am building will have both CNR 4-6-0's and CNJ 4-6-0's working together! It is based on a "what if" concept of if the CNJ had a subsidiary called “the Lehigh & Delaware River” which runs parts of the old L&NE / NYS&W main line in North Jersey and parts of the DL&W Branchville line. Power will be three RS1's, one of my Key CNJ T38's and my CNR H6! The idea is that the CNJ took over the lines in the mid 50's, similar operations to the CNJ's Lehigh & New England Railway. My layout will be operating approx 1968/70 time frame, a good 15 years after the CNJ takeover. The steam locomotives are used in summer excursion service & standby in-case one or more of the RS1's is down (2 ex NYS&W – 1 CNJ). I'd always like that area of North Jersey, it's going to be fun to build! Have fun - Dave, London UK (ex New Hope Pa)

Ah I see you do have a place in your heart for ole pennsy. I am collecting chessie in HO myself but have some stuff in N scale of the PRR. But I can see why you would want to know alot about 1533. Sure sounds like you got your hands full. Can't wait to see what you have to offer here. Thumbsup

CNJ774 Wrote:Hello Again Everyone, Who said I do not model the PRR (jumping the gun a bit, Mr Livesteamer! Cheers )? Being from the NJ/NYC/PA area, I have a soft spot for the PRR. When I was a kid , I'd used to watch long iron ore pellet drags and general freights on the old Bel-Del. I can still hear the GP30's charging thru Lambertville! I have a brass unpainted PRR E3sa 4-4-2 that is in line for rebuilding (or otherwise when I can afford, with DCC/Sound – new motors), an old Sunset H6sb 2-8-0, plus an old NJ International Long Island G53sa 4-6-0. The PRR locomotives are awaiting rebuilding after I finish the 1533, an CNJ RS1 (60% done) and a CNJ USRA 0-6-0. I am mainly a CNJ fan, and collect CNJ locos, but have a thing for the 1533. She was the first steam locomotive I'd ever had a cab ride in as an 8 year old kid. Later on, when I was in high school, the 1533 also the first locomotive I'd ever had fired (she steamed like a dream compared to some locomotives that I had fired in my lifetime). I was lucky enough to learn to fire an locomotive on the 1533. Hope everyone is doing well – Dave Notarius, London UK (New Hope Pa)

I can smell a steam post ten blocks away and when I do clear the tracks because the steam express will be hi ballin through

Howdy; Getting slightly off subject, I too have a few Chessie circus color kitten HO Athearn locomotives that were painted by a friend about a year before the Conrail take-over of the NE bankrupt railroads. One is a GP30 for the Reading, another is a GP7 for the CNJ, and the last is a BB U-Boat for the Lehigh & Hudson River. They were done as part of a possible Chessie take over of the RDG/CNJ/L&HR display done for officials of the NJDOT, SEPTA, the CNJ & RDG in 1975. There were at least 8 or more others done for the display, which was briefly shown in the RDG offices at Reading Terminal. The rest were mainly SW's of some type and one RDG F. After the display was finished, the locos were give away to friends of the my pal, who was a Reading engineer. All were dummy locos, with no details except for the shake in the box bits. (I suspect with hindsight, they were only bog standard Athearn Chessie locomotives that were only re-lettered with new reporting marks). My three are packed away in boxes back in a basement in New Jersey.

Back to the 1533, there has been a rumor that Division Point Brass <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.divisionpoint.com">http://www.divisionpoint.com</a><!-- m -->
is producing a batch of CNR h6 4-6-0 sometime in the near future, depending on pre-orders and other factors. The New Hope & Ivyland still seems to be working on the 1533, but it's only stabilizing work to keep her from getting any worse, mainly rust renovel and painting. The ofical NH&I word is she is still in line for overhaul to return to service, after the Mexican 4-8-4 is finished.

Have fun - Dave

Hello Dave---great pictures of the 1533.It may be a long wait for a Division Point locomotive---you probably would have better luck through E-bay or check Brasstrains.com as they have an excellent selection of brass locomotives.Here's another shot of my locomotive at Leetown

Hi Everyone & also Mr CN Nutbar;

Nice photo of MR CN Nutbar's 1533! Does your locomotive have working lights? I am really impressed with everyones modelling work that has been shown on this site. Anyway, I hope I am not creating a monster, I'm creating a model! Just stoking up the fires trying to get info and more people interested in H6's, especially the 1533. I'd just picked up another Van Hobbies H6, she need a complete re-do. Her previous owner kinda overdid the paint job, she needs a complete stripping down, along with a new motor. Im afraid it is going to have to sit on the shelf for awhile. Now, if I can only find someone who can re-letter a Canadian National wafer herald with the correct fonts for my new fictional railroad, I'll be cooking!

Hope everyone is well - David Notarius, London UK (ex New Hope Pa) And yes, I do have both of Ian Wilson's books on Allandale (thanks for asking Steve).

David, I'm curious to know where you got information that this loco was used in Montreal and when that was supposed to have occurred. There were only 20 H-6-ds built, with 10 serving from the '20s to at least the '40s in the Atlantic Region, and the other 10, for the same time period, in the Central region. The latter did include Montreal, but also Ontario and perhaps even beyond. I'm not disputing that they may have been used there, but I haven't been able to turn up any reference to Montreal other than the fact that the class was built there.

The use of that number was the second on the CNR, with the original 1533 being an I-4-a, also a 10-Wheeler, but built in 1904 by Kingston Locomotive Works, and originally Canadian Government Railways' number 641. (CGR was one of CNR's predecessor roads). This loco was scrapped or disposed of in December of 1925.

The only other reference to a different 1533 is as a builder's number for CNR 7367 (originally Canadian Northern 408). This loco was an 0-6-0, built in 1918 by Kingston (later Canadian) Locomotive Works and scrapped in June of 1954. There's an under-construction photo of it HERE (scroll about half-way down the page).

Locomotives used in commuter service in Montreal included the X-10-a class. These were six locos that were basically Ten-Wheelers, but designated 4-6-4T (I refer to them as vest-pocket Hudsons Wink Goldth ) All six were built for the Grand Trunk Railway in 1914, by Montreal Locomotive Works, and were originally numbered GTR 1540 to 1545 (inclusive). They were re-numbered upon formation of the CNR to 45 to 50 respectively. There are three of these locos preserved (in varying states of preservation might be a better term) and you can view all three HERE. Click on the Unit #, then click on the thumbnail for a larger view.

Hi Wayne and Everyone out here in the Big Blue,
She was at Montreal!! The 1533 info I have is she was transfer from the Montreal commuter pool to Allandale. The reference is from Ian Wilson's Allandale books, which include photos of the 1533. The text mention that she was transferred from Montreal in the late 50's (I'll have to dig up the actual text for the date). Numbered 1325 / 1533, Class H-6-d 4-6-0, was built by Montreal Locomotive Co in 1911, #49878, as Canadian Northern 264, renumbered 1325 in 1912. She became Canadian National 1325, Class H-6-d, in 1920 and was renumbered 1533 in 1956. I've seen two different photos of the 1325 working both freight & passenger trains out of Montreal in the mid 1950's, but I am not allowed to re-print them as part of the deal I had with the collector who sent them to me.

Also of interest, eight of the CNR 4-6-0's were sent to Australia in 1941 as part of the war effort. I found this site that has the details: <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.comrails.com/cr_locos/r_cn.html">www.comrails.com/cr_locos/r_cn.html</a><!-- w --> . Plus, Jay Winn at: <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.vintagerailroadaudio.com">www.vintagerailroadaudio.com</a><!-- w --> has sound recording of hundreds of Canadian National steam, including various 4-6-0's in service. My be useful for anyone programming DCC sound. Hope everyone out there is having fun – David Notarius, London UK

Interesting!

This roster <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.trainweb.org/j.dimech/roster/1947index.html">http://www.trainweb.org/j.dimech/roster/1947index.html</a><!-- m --> does indeed list 1325 in Montreal in 1947. Not that I did not believe you, but rather I was with Wayne with regards to the 4-6-4s being used in commuter service as they were bi-directional.

It would be great to see those photos. Copyright may allow you "fair use" in that if you create a low-res small thumbnail you aren't likely to have any issues. However - totally your decision based on your agreement with the supplier.

Can't find anything else on her at this point.
