O Gauge Engines In Need Of Repair

It's been many a moon since I last posted. As a matter o' fact, I had to create a new user account since it appears my old one has gone missing. Eek

I am in need of some assistance. I have two old diecast engines that are in serious need of restoration/ repair. I need to find someone who can do the work and get an idea of what it will cost. I recently tried to restore an old engine myself and destroyed it. I won't attempt it again.

One is my old Marx 666. The smoker leaks something fierce and the eingine itself is barely running.

The other is an old Lionel 8142. It is missing the front and rear trucks and full of animal hair. I'm scared to even try running this one for fear it might catch fire or something. (My dad picked this one up at an auction somewhere and gave it to me.) Oh, and from the pics I have found of them online, it used to have an attached coal car with the whistle inside. That is gone as well. (And if it will run without it, I don't particularly care to preplace it.)

If need be, I can post pics of both later. I was just mainly hoping someone could point me in the right direction of a good repair spacialist.

Finding parts for the Marx will be tricky but chances are both engines only need to be tore down, cleaned and lubed. On the Lionel (I don't have my book here) if it is a steam engine (hench the coal tender) and it was made in the 60's or older it will run with out the tender. If the trucks that are missing are the pilot and trailing trucks it will probably run without those as well. Most any major train show will have vendors who sell replacement parts for both engines.

Well, that's mainly what I'm looking for someone to do. Tear them down and do whatever is necessary to get them in good working order again. As I said, I tried to do this with one other engine and managed to permanently destroy the motor so I won't be attempting that again. I'd like to get the trucks replaced on the Lionel but first priority is getting it operational again.

Is there not a hobby shop near you? If not you can go to Lionel.com and found out where the closest repair station is. Also if there are any clubs in your area they usually have at least one member who is into 3-rail as well as the 2-rail. Do you know what year the Lionel engine is?

I just called work (Lionel Museum) to have them look that up. It's a C &O 4-4-2 made in 1971-72 with a value (in excellent condition) of $55 so I would be careful about putting any real $$$$ into it. The 70's is looked down on by a lot of Lionel collecters as that was when General Mills had bought the company and was turning out a lot of low grade merchandise. Lionel got control back in the 80's and while that stuff is newer the 80's and up are as a general rule more desirable then the 70's.

Thanks for the info!

I don't want to put a lot into the Lionel but it would be nice to see it running. It's not a bad looking engine except for all the grime and pet hair. It would be a good one to clean up and paint for a christmas tree model I think. I'd live without the trucks as it can run without them and a small O gauge loop shouldn't give it any problems. If the engine were cleaned/fixed and running, I could do the cleaning and paint on the body myself.

As for your other post, there really aren't any hobby shops around here short of driving to Kansas City which is about an hour away. I may have to resort to that if I really want to get the Marx cleaned up and the smoker repaired. (If it's possible.) I hold that Marx near and dear to me for some reason. It was just an eBay find but I really enjoyed running it.... Except for the leaky smoker.
