The reefer doors, if i recall correctly, were still in place, but I can't say if they were operational or not.
The TH&B used similar cars, and, while these pictures don't show much (I was more interested in the diesels), this would also be in the mid-'70s. Note that the first picture is not the same train seen in the other two shots, so, while there weren't a lot of carloads, the cars were common in many trains. As I recall, the CNR generally had more chip cars in their trains, although I can't comment on the frequency.

Hi Matt---I found some information regarding Canadian National's woodchip cars in Partick Dorin's book : "The Canadian National Railways's Story" that might be useful

Than CN nutbar! That's interesting data! I suppose those roofless boxcars are wood outside braced 40' cars according to the dimension.

Wow! Just found this picture of Legrade in 1965... When things goes wrong! I prefer the original version better!

On this one, you can see Legrade at right, the field surrounding it are the "Canardière".

This one was taken in 1960 when they paved Avenue Industrielle (Montmorency Road) which is modelled on the shelf layout. The trains on the background are on QRL&PCo/CNR interchange. Canardière is in the small wood behing the tanks.

I like this kind of picture. Often, electric pole styles, fences, signage and other small details give a better sense of a place than wasting time on other useless details.

Hi Matt, looking forward to seeing more pics of your layout.Looks to me like it holds a lot of promise for being fun to operate.

Thanks Catt,

I'm actually moving the industries around to see if I could improve the operation, but at this point, I think the latest published version is the right one. Next time I go to the club, I'll get some scrap flextrack and cheap turnouts and mock up the trackage. I feel like I should operate it before I order the code 70 track.

Anyway, I've been sidetracked this week. I was doing searches about QRL&PCo rolling stock. Finally, I found great shots from the late 20s when most cars were rebuilt and repainted. Those are professional pictures, so you see a lot of details. I'm actually in the process of rebuilding 8-panel Bowser GLa hoppers into 10-panel version. I also started to kitbash a 32' Pocher (AHM) old time boxcar into a modernize version. QL&P used them in revenue service until 1952 (probably built in 1889). A ARR 40' boxcar looks like a 60' high cube car beside it! Completely ridiculous!

Thye good side of this challenge is that it sparkled my creativity to improve the club layout. Small layout gives you a lot of freedom you don't have with larger endeavour. The large factory with the electric poles and parallel road from this challenge will probably be echoed at the club. It's funny how electric poles, roads and a few well-thought buildings can really reproduce an era and area without having to mimick everything.

A big thanks to Mr. Jalbert at Chateau-Richer's archives for these incredible pictures.

It's been a while since I updated this thread. In fact, as I dreaded, many things came up in the last month, work, freight cars and... most ideas of my challenge layout ended up on the club layout (if you've followed other threads, it is the so-called Lairet Sub). In a sense it's great because the experiments I freely conducted with the layout paid off. However, I don't feel like duplicating scenes on two different layouts.

Also, as youve all seen, I've been under the good old Doc's influence and started a major freight car overhaul projects. This means the challenge layout is actually loaded with cars in different completion stage. This gave me an idea: to built a car shop with trackage where I could store and shot overhauled cars and do some little switching moves. The locale would stay the same as QRL&PCo Shops were located east of Industrial Avenue and connected the mainline as depicted on my previous layout idea. Several years ago, I built a large reproduction of QRL&PCo shops with DPM parts. Half of it was reconverted, but I still have the car shop. I think I'll go this way. However, I must admit I won't go very far until the challenge deadline (work load increase before my leave in Europe will give me little time). I'll probably try to lay few track, reusing old salvaged code 83 turnouts for this purpose.

For those who loved Legrade, don't be sad, I'm working to implement it on the club layout where it will be built full scale! ;-)

Don't worry, Matt, I keep getting sidetracked, too, and have added a car not included in my original Challenge post and have also found three more which could benefit from a few upgrades. 35
What was to be the balance of my Challenge stuff has been started, but probably won't be done in time either. Wallbang Misngth
