Various weathering project

Madness! Some people think summer isn't a modelling season but I'm not following this mindset!

I recently decided to improve and weather a few cars. If you want more info about the WIP, just follow the blog links (more pictures too).

The first one was to see if I could improve an IHC double door 50ft boxcar... Answer? NO!!! There's a limit to what you can do with a real bad model. But at least, it was an occasion to practice weathering!

The next ones were a set of kitbashed Roundhouse 40ft boxcar into woodchip service. I've built 9 cars. Those are the 3 last I weathered:

Then I tried to improve a toyish Roundhouse boxcar into something more realistic. It's crazy how a paint job can bring a car to life.

As if it was not enough, I decided to update an old Intermountain CN boxcar I painted and lettered. My goal was to represent a very decrepit car still in revenue service circa 1985.

And the last one was about using an extra True Line reefer shell painted the wrong color to make a believeable car. I had to make a new underframe and details for it.

All in all, it was really fun to build, bash and weathered these cars over the last two weeks. I still have other projects, including kitbashing a Train Miniature OSB boxcar into a CN MoW storage car. For this one, I followed Doctorwayne's excellent tutorial.

Good looking results, Matt (as usual). I especially like the weathering job on the old green leaf boxcar - you nailed that one dead-on, and it looks exactly as I remember them. Thumbsup Thumbsup Ditto for the woodchip cars: they used to roll through here regularly on their way to the paper mill in Thorold.
I think that you did a nice job on the GTW car, too, but it would look even better if you could lower the way it sits on its trucks. I think that that improvement would make it look even more convincing, despite lowering the overall height.

Thanks Wayne! You're right. Since it was talgo trucks before modifications, the car rode quite high on its truck. I'll file it down a little bit.

Nice work! Are the converted woodchip boxcars free lanced or are there plans available for them?

I didn't saw you reply until today.

No, they follow prototype and were far to be oddballs back in the 60s and 70s (even early 80s).

I worked from pictures taken and shared by George Dutka:

CPR had similar design cars. Chris van der Heide built a few.

Thanks for the reply and links Matt. They are unique and look like a straightforward car to build. Now I need to figure out if any ever saw service on PEI in the 1977-1985 period.

Very nice weathering. The rock boxcar needs the weathering most. They look like a toy out of the box. Weathering makes them look right.

So true. That blue paint - and GTW blue paint - didn't stand well under UV.

@Railnet: I can't say for PEI, but I've been told they were extremely frequent in Eastern Canada. A fellow club member watched hours of BETA and VHS tapes from all CN subdivisions in Qubec filmed circa 1981-1983 and told me these woodchip boxcars could be seen everywhere on sidings. The tapes were used by CN to feed their train simulator back then.

Sounds like I will have to add a couple to the roster because they may of been here and they stand out in the sea of 40' boxcars.
