Old Steamers

I primed and painted my Little 6, and isolated the motor brushes from the frame.  I got too hasty and installed a decoder before testing everything on DC, and I let the magic smoke out  Sad.

I am now testing on DC:  Blush

I also picked this up for $10 at a sale:

The box says "The General," but it's not the General.  It looks the loco from "Petticoat Junction."  For an old-time locomotive, it's really big--it's as big as my Bowser Casey Jones 4-6-0:

Some Googling leads me to believe this is the Tyco Rogers 1890 Old Time Loco, and it's really OO scale.

I am kinda new at this rebuild stuff but not to the hobby. I have a Mantua mikado that I took apart to clean and lube. in the process of reassembly I dropped a bushing that found all the other dropped parts and now I need another one. It goes on the shaft in the gearbox. Where do I even begin to look for a new bushing for this locomotive? It is a great running locomotive. I feel it can't be too ancient as it has a can motor in it.

Les, not sure of any kind of vendor that would carry anything like that but, there is currently a Mantua pacific/mikado motor on ebay for 12.99 plus 4.00 shipping, Buy It Now. Says it's older style motor. May also look on ebay for donor locomotive.

Also, check train shows, swap meets, yard sales, garage sales, flea markets, those Mantua locomotives were pretty common.

Yes I saw that earlier, not what I need. I need the gearbox the motor hooks to. It needs to be a can motor also I will try to get a photo tomorrow so you can see what I am looking for.

My apologies, when I read bushing, I got am image of an armature in my head. So yeah, sent you in the wrong direction there.

You may have some luck with Dave at Northwest Short Line as far as locating a replacement bushing.

Les, was just wondering if your gear box may look like this: [Image: 5873940057_762bc05cdd_b_zpsy3ouzbly.jpg]

Or maybe like this:

I was finally able to track down a John English locomotive with the valve gear at a good price Thumbsup . No tender though. Going into the, "I'll get to it some day collection", for now.

The valve gear for these was made by Central Valley, part # K12. I've never seen these pop up on ebay, since I've been looking.

Mark, I have a John English tender for the Pacific, although it has no trucks.  I've also removed, using a mill file, most of the protruding "coal" heap, as it was going to be converted to an oil burner many years ago.

I still have the locomotive, too, with Central Valley valve gear.  It was converted somewhat for my freelance EG&E, and is currently in the shop for another makeover.  Here's what it looked like before being taken apart for the latest rebuild...

I dug out the old tender for the photos shown below, and noticed that I've also filed-off the cast-on ladder and rivet details from the rear of the tender, too.

Les, I think you maybe at a point where your going to have to give Dave at NWSL a call and see if he can help you out. I believe the drive in your picture was what Mantua referred to as their "power drive". That might help Dave narrow down a bushing for you or email him the photos. However, you maybe looking at a complete gearbox replacement, which the NWSL guys can help you with also.

There is a complete Mantua Mikado drive(looks like it has a power drive gearbox )on ebay now also. Going for around 50 bucks with shipping. Lot of money for a bushing. But, you may ending up spending around that much with NWSL if you have to go the new gearbox route and possibly new motor(not totally sure about new motor).

Keep your eyes open on ebay, though. You never know what will show up. Maybe some of the other guys here can point you in another direction or may have another work around.

I did get in contact with NWSL and Dave replied. We exchanged some emails and he made a suggestion. I ordered it and waiting to get it in the mail, probably Monday. I will let you know how it all works out when I get it.
