Freelance 2019-2
#1
The next version of Freelance is underway. I ordered eight Peco Code 83 #5 switches.

The theme will stay in the south east and be more close to Freelance 2018-1. That layout was the first time I reserved 4 - 8 inch depth for the buildings and I liked it very much. It became a victim of the short lived streetcar excursion.
The current Freelance 2019-1 layout is fine but the "backdrop buildings" of less than one inch depth are optimized for tracks but it is out of balance. I will correct that over the next time.

Actual start will be in about three weeks due to another long time planned vacation.

Reinhard, I been meaning to ask and if you don't mind me asking. Do you ever operate those magnificent layouts?

Serious answer. Yes daily! If you watch my building process you may observe that I keep the none operational time as short as possible. Usually less than a week. At least the minimum trackage is done as fast as possible. The Peco switches without any wiring are my best friends :-)

@Mike, yes I will stay with HO scale, CSX, NS, FEC, FCEN and all about 2000 - 2010 with an option of north east 198x with Conrail by building and car swapping etc..

Reinhard, I'd venture that you would have been a very successful set dresser for Broadway stage productions, skilfully changing the scenes to suit the play and the actors, just as you change your layout to suit the era and locale, and populate that stage with locomotives and rolling stock appropriate to the scene.

I always enjoy watching as you weave your magic.   Worship Worship

The old four plates are ready for the last trip to the junk yard. The new plates shall arrive Tuesday 2pm.
The design of a solid frame with easy replaceable plates is based on a layout from the UK model railroader Alcan ManOne.

Freelance 2019-2 is in (extreme limited) operation.
I asked the carpenter to do two sets of top plates to store one spare set in the basement.

First track layout.
A spur runs through an industry area serving four industries south of the tracks. Three eastward and one westward. The actual placement of that four tracks and one or two possible more switches serving industries with double tracks will be done when the buildings are planned..
A parallel spur with an intermediate connection serves either one or two low profile industries (team track etc.) north of the spur or may be used as a temporary staging track (or a run around when no real railroaders hating the time delay of run arounds are present ;-) ). In any case it is no siding under dispatchers control.

An important design point is the open space behind the tracks permitting background buildings with a remarkable depth of 4" - 8". I did it first time on Freelance 2018-1 and love it. Especially when standing in front of the layout and looking on the roofs.

I dropped the east-west roads from my previous layouts. There may be two or three north - south streets separating the industries..

ps. The layout had a complete shutdown from Saturday afternoon until Tuesday evening only!

I never thought about it that way but you are right. That is what I am doing with the scenic part of the layout. It is like a stage.

Placement of the main industry building is the next topic.
I started with bare structure kernels of all five buildings to get a visual impression. Did it the first time and it is a great help to have all raw buildings at a very early stage on the layout. They are made of 10mm and 5mm paper laminated foam board and can be modified with little hassle. They are 9, 10 and 11cm (about 4" +/- 2/5") tall. They will be laminated with prototype images from Streerview and further detailed later.

Another wallpapering day with an universal building suited to handle anything with pipes, hoses or loading dock. The doors are open and backed with black rooms for further detailing.

Started the west most industry. It is dominated by the truck loading gates. The track gates are barely visible and mostly hidden behind the curve. The roof got populated as an example.

The pair of east industry buildings got a slick and modern wallpaper image. They are the largest buildings but shall not dominate the layout. Therefor the plain appearance. Work is suspended until tomorrow.

Did the ballast and a base ground cover. The gray islands protect streets, back yards loading areas and the building footprints. The paper laminated buildings need to be removed while any ground cover is applied with plenty of water.

ps. This two photos are like a track plan.
