Big Blue has inspired some purchases
#1
I've been digging enthusiastically into Big Blue over the last few days and that's inspired me to make some purchases and get rolling on some railroad-related activities.

First I saw the layout section and thought that I ought to update my video tour of my layout from front-of-the-engine perspective - I've done quite a lot since my last recording using my son's helmet camera laid on a flat car (shown below).

Problem was....  I haven't charged the camera in a couple of years and the battery won't take a charge.  Having a new battery sent to me....

Seeing all the blue (maybe it's just the background) has inspired me to create the first Conrail blue item on my layout (I'm modeling 1976 when not much stuff had received paint yet) - decided to buy an N5 caboose (in Pennsylvania RR livery) from ebay plus decals from K4 (also on ebay).  Another project!

In my research over the past few days I also continue to see Kartrak stickers on a bunch of photographs.  (Kartrak was one of the forerunners of Bar Codes).  Decided I needed to buy some Kartrak decals in HO (K4 on ebay).  Those are going on most of my rolling stock as I weather each car.  Speaking of weathering, I put up some photos of my weathering of two CNW 40-ft semitrailers decorated for the Bicentennial.  Turned out pretty well I think. It's on the weathering section of Big Blue.

So, here's the before and after of the PRR N5 caboose...   now blue with Conrail decals drying.  Here's the problem with any kit - you see things you'd like to improve - like the non-existent curved grabs on each side.  Found a Walters caboose detail kit... more work!

Tichy offers both the curved grabs for the sides of a car, along with the upside-down "L"-shaped ones for the ends of a caboose, and both straight and drop-style grabirons, too.

I used them on this re-worked Athearn caboose...

She's up and running.  Got my new supply of #80 bits and went to town.  Sadly the side grab irons for the corner supports weren't in the caboose detail kit, but I put a bunch of grab irons on anyway and did some minor (for me) weathering on the recently-out-of-the-paintshop caboose.

Thanks! Just purchased windows and my missing smokestack for that unit - more work to do! That's one nice thing about Bowser, they typically have replacement parts for reasonable prices and they're always easy to deal with.

Purchased a set of Cal Scale N5 Caboose marker lights, but I'm not sure where exactly under the roof they would mount. Anyone have some photos? Can't seem to find much on the internet.

Todd, I am sure I have more N5 photos but this one was quick for me to find. It is a work caboose, but the marker light brackets are pretty much standard on this type of cabin car.  I have enlarged the area for you
I hope this helps.
