Well speaking of cars, You really need to be careful of routing as this July, 1979 Chessie photo shows.  I guess these folks had a delay on the delivery of their new Granada. Charlie

Charlie these reminded me of a video clip I saw of a train going through a low clearance bridge and ripping the whole top off of an autorack loaded with beautiful Jeep Wranglers a few years ago.

These gondolas (or possibly the same gondola) are probably lacking a through inspection. They are close to end of life but still 600 miles from their home road. These could be  real modeling challenge. May 1977

I took this one in East Liverpool, Ohio 8/5/1977.  It shows there were 3 levels, and no graffiti.  This is a little grainy because I had taken some night photos the night before and pushed the roll (Ektachrome 200) to ASA 1600 while processing.

Here is a 3 bay covered hopper with a build date of August 1964 that has friction bearings.  I don't thinl I have any more photos of a 3 bay hopper that isn't roller bearing equipped.  The photo is from May of 1977

Here is a short TOFC flat car still being used in August 1980. If you look closely you can see a yellow dot over the truck on the right side.
I remember them because they were applied because of some bad wheels. I found this information to further explain them:

U-1  INSPECTION STENCILS

These stencils were applied to designate freight cars which had 33" wheels
manufactured by the Southern Wheel Company.  These wheels were suspected of
failing in service and causing several serious derailments.
This FRA regulation began March 31, 1978 with the inspection of all 70 ton
or less cars which had 33" wheels.

Freight cars with this type wheels were stenciled   null  with a 6"
white dot in a 12" black square.

Cars identified with the white dots could not be used in a train carrying
hazardous materials.  Beginning December 31, 1978 cars that had the white
dots could not be used in any train.  The wheels had to be removed and
replaced with wheels of an approved type.

Freight cars that had approved wheels were stenciled  null with a 6"
yellow dot in a 12" black square.

These cars could be used in any service.
New cars built up to Dec 31, 1978 had the yellow dots applied at the factory.
There was no date given for removal of these stencils so they remained for
several years.

Another way to use some of your not so nice rolling stock. MOW got a lot of cast offs to use as they needed. Here is a flat car modified for the wreck train.

A blow up of the wheel section shows the difference in the weathering of friction bearings and roller bearings.
Charlie

Quite a contrast between the two.
