The TSS Earnslaw, built in Dunedin, 1911, then dismantled, and railed, as a kitset, to Kingston at the southern end of Lake Wakatipu where she was rebuilt and launched in 1912. She was then in service with the New Zealand Railways for 57 years, transporting cargo, sheep and passengers to the high-country stations that bounded the lake.
I have fond memories sailing on her, while still in NZR service, as a youngster and was very pleased to be able to rekindle those memories.

Steam engine jubilee in Dresden, Germany

This and next weekend we have the 90th jubilee of our park train engines, 15" gauge engines all of Pacific type and built as 1 to 3.3 scale replications of Deutsche Reichsbahn unity-engines class 03.
First three engines were built in 1925 by Kraus & Cie. (later Krauss-Maffei) in Munich, Germany. (Kraus-Maffei also known as the builder of 3000 hp diesel-hydraulic engines for SP.)
All in all 15 engines of this type were built until 1950 and now they run or are exhibited in Dresden, Leipzig, Stuttgart (all Germany), Austria, Espania, Great Britain and India.
Maybe it would be of interest: In times of WWII the two engines from Dresden and the one from Leipzig (after 1945 East Germany and Russian occupying territory) were secretly stored in querry and the Russian army did not found them. In other case these three engines would have been confiscated and transported to Russia - and we would never again have seen them.

And now our park railway celebrates the 90th jubilee of so called "Lilliputian engines" here in Dresden where the engine from Leipzig were transported to Dresden for a steam event with three engines (including the two battery-powered electric engines owned by Dresden's park railway). Enjoy the pictures!

However the eight car trains would not be a problem for each of these engines alone.

Krøderbanen Museum Railway, last day of the season

Krøderbanen is Norway's longest museum railway, and last sunday was the final day of the season with trains operating. There were 4 trains (2 steam engines and 2 diesel railcars) running on a timetable between the two end stations Krøderen and Vikersund, with scheduled meets at the two intermediate stations Kløftefoss and Sysle.

Vigdis and I arrived at Krøderen on saturday and spent the night at a motell, before spending the entire sunday chasing trains back and forth between Krøderen and Vikersund (a distance of 25km / around 15 miles). Schraddel, I think you may have mentioned that you were a roundhouse foreman (or roughly equivalent job title) for the German rail system. I'm curious about the piles of "stuff" I'm seeing in the photos I took of German roundhouses, etc (Bws) in 1971. What are they? Coal? Ashes? How did they get there? Thanks!

Madrid Train Crash

I just found this:

MADRID (AP) — A security camera has captured the moment when a Spanish train veers off the track and crashes into a wall at high speed.

The footage posted Thursday on YouTube shows the train rounding a bend, making a turn to the left underneath a road overpass.

The train's first carriage behind the locomotive appears to come off the tracks first, slamming the tail of the locomotive into a concrete wall.

All the carriages can be seen starting to come off the tracks as the locomotive hurtles toward the camera position.

The security camera footage appears to stop at the moment that the engine crashes into it.

Another marathon train ride on TV

Earlier we've had both the Bergen line and the Flåmsbana line (as well as The Coastal Express, but that's a boat ride) broadcasted real-time on Norwegian television. This Christmas, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Nordlandsbanen line, there will be a nearly ten hour broadcast from the longest railway line in Norway. The 729 kilometer line between Trondheim and Bodø, crossing the Arctic Circle and containing 295 bridges and 154 tunnels, will be shown in its entirety on Norwegian television channel NRK2 on December 29th, and hopefully it will also be available on web TV. The program was recorded beforehand, and will show all four seasons of the year during the trip.
