Steam Locomotive Terminals Operations

I am currently very frustrated with trying to design and layout the engine terminal on the new layout. I have a bunch of structures with their appropriate uses. It is where and how to arrange them that is driving me nuts.

After some contemplation I realize that perhaps my understanding of how things work may not be the correct way or the best way. Thusly here is my question:

When a steam locomotive comes into a terminal for servicing is there a set way of doing things? By such I mean does he dump his ash first, then get water, then coal, and lastly sand if needed? Or is there some other method to the madness?

I believe once I have a better understanding of how this works I can complete the terminal and yard.

as i wrote in my layout thread, i had need for modern rolling stock.

The seed was laid here:

So i decided when there are modern era is estimated at the Fremo meetings of the SWD, then i go Canadian.
Meanwhile some modern Diesel locos of CN prototype had accumulated at home:

A pair of GP40-2W with the so called map scheme painting.
My questions:
When this scheme appeared the first time?
Was it very common?

The same questions for the zebra stripes painting.

Fished a cheap ALCO out of the bay with an old CN scheme painting.

I have a question about Phase 2 EMD NW2 switchers built in 1945.

Would 567A engines be in Phase 2 EMD NW2 switchers built in 1945? In later rebuilding upgrade programs, could they be upgraded to 567ACs and would they get an increase in horsepower?

I was asked by someone when the last wood cabooses were used in North America and my guess was the late 1960s or early 1970s. I really had no answer and now I’m curious. When were the last ones in service?

I'm curious to know when ditch lights started to become implemented. I have a Conrail GP38-2 that'll be modeled after a prototype around 1995-98. The most recent picture I've seen of the prototype is in 1993 without ditch lights. I know there's always an exception to the rule with everything we come across with model trains but I would like to narrow it down. I'm leaning more towards installing them.

I'm curious what type of covered hoppers were roaming the rails in the mid 50s, specifically for plastic pellet service and who were the major carriers for this commodity in that time frame. Any information would be appreciated.
