Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 11-01-2012

TeeJay, I try to get at least an hour a day in. Some days I spend the whole day. It is a great past time for an old retired fart.
I have to stop anything that takes a lot of eye work because the cataracts are ready to be fixed but the doctor isn't ready for me.
I can still see fine, but the detail work tires my eyes very fast. I should be able to be done with it by the end of Jan. I hope.

In the mean time, big stuff has to be done.

Any updates on the stadium build?
Charlie

Here are a couple pictures of the uptown team track area. A long way to go.

Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 11-14-2012

I've been slowy putting this area together in my head and now, like everything else, it doesn't work the way I wanted it, but it is coming together.
If anyone can give me ideas on how to model mud splashing up on the rails it is a detail I need to add when this gets near being finished. In the fifties these team track yards were just about at the end of their life. Trucks had taken much of the local business. This yard survived until the late 60's but was not used much. I remember the yard was all weeds and mud.
The last train to this area was in 1965.
The building is a shell that will be covered with brick. It is in place so I can get the track and clearence right.
The coal yard was a small dealer, only receiving one load at a time. It was odd that it came by rail untill the early sixties because we have a lot of coal locally.
The coal trestle was restricted to "car only" even in the PC turntable of 1968.

Wow Charlie, you really have a lot going on! When I look at your photos I'm impressed by the size of your layout with its many different scenes! Hmmmmm, mud splotched on the tracks could maybe be represented by dry brushed splotches of brown paint, I'd think, if I understand the effect you're after. I have to say I'm drooling over the long roster of Pennsy diesels on that shelf in the background of some of your pics!

I hope you are a young man Charlie, that's a lot of RR to build!

Ralph, most of the ones you see are too new (era) to be on the layout, nor are they good runners, most being old AHM or Modelpower. Not bad looking to display but would never win awards for detail Goldth

Mike I am a very young man I am only 4 years older than you. We have lots of time..I look back to where it was in March of 2010 when I think I have hit the wall.
I'm hoping some day soon you can make the trip and spend a few days with me, Ed and Wayne playing with trains and watching the real thing.

Sounds good Charlie but right now I'd be satisified with walking again. Thumbsup

Hi Charlie---I'm looking forward to the completion of your current expansion to your impressive layout. On my layout I have a team track that even though it is operational,it is used primarily for storing rolling stock---I've tried to give the impression of an under-utilized section of track that has become overgrown with weeds and small schrubs, ballast is almost non-existent

Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 11-15-2012

That looks great Ed. What I remember is there was a lot of long brown grass, it may have been what they called cheat, and it was always brown, and there was mud when it was wet, and dust when it was dry. I don't think you can make track that bad in HO and keep cars on it. Ties were all most non existant as well as the ballast was covered in mud. I started with the ballast, but it will soon be buried. Here's a video by a guy who's done some distressed track. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://vimeo.com/17870094">http://vimeo.com/17870094</a><!-- m --> If you go through his thread here <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho-scale/11046-winter-new-england-mark-ii.html">http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho ... rk-ii.html</a><!-- m --> you can find a lot more of his ideas on muddy track with pumper ties, etc

Thank you, that is exactly what I have in mind. He gets away with a lot more than I thought would be possible in HO.
The 12" = 1' line I took over to operate had track beyond what he has, and Conrail derailed almost every time they made the run. We put in 300 ties the first month and never had a derailment after the first trip where the locomotive spread the gauge on a curve and dropped in. The FRA track inspector told me he had written 684 violations the previous year (on 3.22 miles of track) so you can imagine what it was like. 300 ties over 3.2 miles was a good start but it took a lot more over the years. There wasn't one bolt in any joint that wasn't flopping, and at one joint there was a 5 inch gap .

If you scroll down on this page, you can get an idea of how he did this. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho-scale/11046-winter-new-england-mark-ii-10.html">http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho ... ii-10.html</a><!-- m --> I've also seen guys take a length of flex track and hold a screwdriver vertical to the rail and hit the screwdriver with a hammer. That may be less predictable. The guy also uses epoxy or fake water or whatever to make puddles along the ties. Scroll down on this page too. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho-scale/11046-winter-new-england-mark-ii-12.html">http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho ... ii-12.html</a><!-- m --> Yet more on this page <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho-scale/11046-winter-new-england-mark-ii-13.html">http://www.thewhistlepost.com/forums/ho ... ii-13.html</a><!-- m --> Still looking for another video!
