Cheers Great work on that exterior stairway! It really adds character to the elevator! Love the night scenes too! Thumbsup

Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 10-15-2013

I started this project 2 years ago, while I still have plenty to do I have made a little progress. It is not exactly like the prototype, and is only a background building, but it will add a little more interest to the buildings along the Webber Way siding.

I like the star logos. Cool sign! Are you going to run a milk train?

Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 10-16-2013

Hi Ralph
The logos are theirs. I can't find a link to the picture of the dairy after it was painted white (my time frame) but here is a little history.

I never figured why they had a dairy in town, but there was another one right out side of town. It is a good article and shows lots of the interior, which I am not getting into.
I couldn't justify a milk train, but let's just say they have a car dropped daily when the local works the town.

Thanks for the link! Those are great photos of the dairy operation. The promo shot with the "celebrity" has considerable charm. The bottle she is holding reminded me that as a kid we had a milk box and received glass bottles with foil tops. Haven't thought about that for years, if not decades! I remember reading an article about milk train operations in either MR or RMC sometime in the early 70's. It was earlier than my modeled era but I enjoyed the whole concept and the special cars.

Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 10-16-2013

Big Blue,
The gold stars on the sides still have to have the area surrounding them painted black. my memory remembers red in the band surrounding the letters and the B&W picture shows 2 different shades of gray so I am probably OK with it. It probably doesn't matter until someone comes up with the color picture I couldn't find. Goldth
I am finding out a lot of information on sites on facebook. It is amazing the pictures people are posting and the memories that are being shared. My home town has a FB site and I am sure there are more of them, and all you need do is ask some questions, or post a picture, and someone will help you out. There are quite a few older folks on that medium and they are like having hard drives full of information.
I find as I go along, there are a lot of interesting things that catch my eye. I am putting buildings similar to what I remember, but there is no way to make them fit where they would have been. I am going to place some great looking building backgrounds from other places too since I really am not modelling a prototype town.
I hope some day to get around to making everything a little better, but all I really need is to make me happy, and so far so good.
You guys do inspire me.
Thanks to all
Charlie

A little video tour. The camera is very low quality. Hope tio be able to do better soon. What a great way to find the bad spots.

Hey Charlie, cab cameras are fun in any case, but I should have warned you that they show the things you don't see that you then feel need improvement. I ended up devoting an entire thread to projects that couldn't be seen unless viewed by train cam! Smile

Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 11-15-2013

Hi Ralph,
I read that entire thread and got some great ideas from it. I still need to implement most of them, but the good part is that this camera isn't very good resolution so many flaws go unseen.
I haven't got past the background building stage yet. And then there are trees and shrubs. I have tried the idea of stuffing and gluing foam to the plastic loom material and that works great. I have a large leaf bag full of foam to grind and color that my daughter got from the upholstery shop where she works part time. I even found some great wire wheels for my drill to grind it with. I even have more material for the furnace filter trees as well as a bunch of copper to make armatures for hardwood trees. I should be able to keep busy all winter, just with landscaping. At least you don't have to cut the lawns every 4 days on the layout.
I picked up a new foster furkid the 20th of October and I found him a home in Baltimore. The lady that is getting him will get him just before Thanksgiving. He is an 8 month old pup and has really disrupted things around here. He is a real love bug but got off to a rough start. He was in 4 homes in the past 2 months. My girl gets along fine, but our little male is a real grump and I have to keep him away from Beck, he just doesn't like to play anymore. So the layout is in limbo for another week then back at it.

Re: Charlie b's layout - Ralph - 11-16-2013

Sounds like a great winter of projects lined up. You have a nice source for ground and tree foam!
Best wishes with the foster pup! I can imagine the little fella requires some attention that might take you away from the layout. You're doing a great thing with that foster pet plan. Friends of ours here just starting doing something similar and already love it.

I'm thinking of breaking out that cheapie video camera again for another train-cam video. I need to learn how to edit scenes for a YouTube video so I can alternate shots from my cab mock-up, to shots from a trackside observer's perspective, to some from "inside" the loco.

Hi Charlie---I really enjoyed the cab ride over the Wilderson Division and the furkids put on a great show as well with all their antics

Re: Charlie b's layout - Charlie B - 12-08-2013

I got my key fob cam and did some adjusting of the lighting made a test run of the outer track. for the price they do a great job.

I did one of the whole layout and posted it to my youtube channel but the quality is really bad.
I managed to build 3 caboose kits, a box car kit and another stock car this week end as well as putting up a couple backdrop buildings. They are lighted, but not powered yet. I'll post a few pictures tomorrow, I am just too tired tonight. It took youtube a whole day I think to get the video up, I kept checking back but it was still not ready. I checked tonight and it is up and had 17 views all ready. I have some styrene to pick up tomorrow too.
