And a last one to fill the background gap right to the silo. Seven buildings form the mill.

Reinhard,

Very nice job on the mill, like the look of the multiple buildings with the different roof lines. Thumbsup

I'll second that. Can't believe the speed with which you got it completed :o

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 03-15-2012

Thanks for the kind words.

I am considering two choices

a. The ground cover basically stays as is. The buildings will be surrounded by sand, gravel and green.
or
b. The ground will become concrete. The buildings will be surrounded by industrial like concrete planes.

Do you have a preference or recommendation?

Re: Freelance 2012 - Tyson Rayles - 03-15-2012

If I was to go with a solid surface I would lean towards asphalt over concrete as it would have been faster and cheaper so therefore more likely to have been used.

Re: Freelance 2012 - steinjr - 03-15-2012

Holy cow! Every time I turn around, you have made a new change to your layout, and you have again done what I would have sworn would be impossible - topped the excellent work you have done before !

Bravo!

Smile,
Stein

Mike, Stein, thanks. The concrete is already under construction (all my harddisk are on the layout :-). Why asphalt over concrete? Would they do concrete and than asphalt immediately at the first construction time or do the asphalt patches later when the concrete become more and more damaged?

I have a problem with the "street running". I do usually lack the precision to get it look really good. My idea / bypass is to run the concrete up to the ties and fill the gap to the rail with fine gravel (sand). Between the rails will be a strip of concrete again.

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 03-15-2012

It seems to me that while you change your emphasis and prototype now and then, you tend to focus on areas roughly between Texas and California. I actually don't see that many paved-over industrial areas, especially around railroad tracks. Here are some examples:

I'm inclined to say you've got things more or less right the way you have them -- a lot of the parking and roadway area in my photos is just packed dirt.

That is very helpful. I have been caught by the all paved yard of General Mill. It is a very dense industry from US standards. The photos you appended show more the usual distribution of paved roads, dirt and buildings on an industry property. With that in mind I will cut back on the paved part and therefor "street running" on my layout and restrict paved roads and tracks to crossings as shown on the photo of the cheese factory.

This is the current "all paved" version.

ps. Yes, I stay in general in the south west area between Texas and California. This mill was not planned but after four warehouses in a row set flat to the backdrop something had to happen to break that boring string of structures without ruining the track track plan optimized for long tracks.

Re: Freelance 2012 - fwwrmodeler - 03-15-2012

Reinhard,

The new mill looks great. the silos that are between to building, are these kits? Or kitbashed? Was looking for some and having a time finding any available. Seems to be a bitch to purchase a $50.00 dollar kit for just a silo that is included. Seen a couple of kits from Europe in Walthers catalog but seem to be overpriced or not available for my needs.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 03-15-2012

And with trimmed concrete (thanks to JWB!)

@fwwrmodeler , the solos are universal silos made by Faller in Germany. They are perfect for cement etc. but I think they may be a nice decoration for a flour mill too. Have to do some piping etc. for connection. The small silos are "Industrial silos" part number 130476 made by Faller.

Reinhard,
a very nice modelled insustrial area with a big different to others - not all railroad models run in foreground. Some are switched behind and between buildings. I find that this is a very nice looking arrangement and very close to reality. Congratulation!
