Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 05-04-2012

Steve, Kurt, Larry thanks for the kind words. I do enjoy working on small sections very much while I still have a full functioning layout. But the weather is improving, summer gets closer and I should plan to spend more of my time in the sun.

An update how the rust developed during the last 48 hours. The rust is not bad but it is not perfect fine for 1:87 scale. I would be better for O scale and up. I did try it some years ago on metal roofs of boxcars for rusty patches but it looked not like rust to scale. However, it is ok for a junk corner.

Reinhard it's always a pleasure to see your work! Cheers

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 05-05-2012

The new road has been opened. The Corman crew tests how much fun it is to cross it again and again and again.... Nope
While the road is somewhat short it was the only place I could find where it could have a close to prototypical wide (about 5 1/4"). I need a solution for the backdrop.
ps. Did Gary mention when he plans to spend vacation in Europe and will have his painting tools with him? Wink

Re: Freelance 2012 - Tyson Rayles - 05-05-2012

Very nice!

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 05-05-2012

A couple of possibilities for handling the road-backdrop interface: a highway construction project (implied, offscene) with detour signs (Blair Line is one possibility) and concrete barriers placed where the road meets the backdrop. Or an emergency situation with police and/or fire vehicles blocking the road at that point, also concealing the road/backdrop joint. You could cut inexpensive Walthers/Boley fire trucks in half, for instance.

Re: Freelance 2012 - Rscott417 - 05-05-2012

the new road looks great, keep up the good work. I don't remember which issue it was in but I remember an article in model railroader that showed you how to use a photo to create the illusion of depth to the layout. You would just have to figure out a way to hide the edges of the photo, the final result looks very convincing.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 05-05-2012

I thought I could grab something like this from streetview.

It become worse if you get closer

I had a 500+ pages book of Photoshop Elements 10 in my hands when shopping last week . Didn't buy it because I thought it might be overkill. The slim books covered improving photos only but not rearranging and composing. I wish I had the thick one here now... I have to learn Photoshop Sad

Re: Freelance 2012 - Rscott417 - 05-05-2012

Not bad for a first attempt, it can only get better.

Re: Freelance 2012 - Gary S - 05-05-2012

Hey, the photo doesn't look bad at all. If you didn't change it a bit, I would call it good. Still, experimenting with photoshop can only make you more skillful for future projects.

Oh... I appreciate the compliment Big Grin

The rusty industrial equipment/junk looks good. How about also adding some broken wood strip and such in the area just to add more clutter? Maybe some scrap pipe and such too?

It's always fun watching your progress. Thumbsup

Reinhard this looks great! Thumbsup

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 05-06-2012

The clutter improved...
The lumber had a bath in the black wash, the iron strips got the rust paint and will be more rusty tomorrow. The undefined black stuff in the left foreground are parts of a black plastic hanger that had an unpleasant time in an old coffee mill. Kurt demonstrated a similar technique some month ago to get some rubbish for his HO layout. I could convince my wife she needs a new one....

Re: Freelance 2012 - Gary S - 05-06-2012

Now that is some clutter... looks very good, nice and industrial!

Re: Freelance 2012 - cnw1961 - 05-06-2012

Reinhard, I cannot take credit for that black plastik junk, you must have seen it somewhere else, but it looks good as does the whole scene Thumbsup Thumbsup .

Re: Freelance 2012 - tetters - 05-06-2012

Some really good ideas here. I love how this layout has evolved and keeps evolving over the years. Every time I check the updates there is a new building or scene under development. Thumbsup

I like the background photo. Very nice job.
