Here's a few more BNSF Gensets & GP50 at timetable east end (cardinal north) of Malabar Yard 2-4-12.

Re: Freelance 2012 - lajry - 06-09-2012

A topic on trainorders.com lead me to this site w/ alot of downtown LA industrial building pix:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/emd111/3640534874/in/photostream/">http://www.flickr.com/photos/emd111/364 ... otostream/</a><!-- m -->
And yes had already sent this to faraway. LOL

Re: Freelance 2012 - lajry - 06-11-2012

This one is for you Reinhard or anyone else if you've ever thought about having a Santa Fe SSB1200 or two. Back in 1983 LAJ was supposed to get 4 Santa Fe SSB1200s but they were involved in a derailment. Santa Fe sent them back & told LAJ to keep using the CF7 loaners. Attached two pix. One is the Cab hop w/ the SSB1200s heading east from Charlie Slater X- LAJ/ATSF/BNSF conductor now retired. Second is my version of what one might have looked like if they had kept them. Had a Kato NW2 in in the SSB1200 Warbonnet scheme "begging" to become LAJ. So used the decals Rail Graphics did for my LAJ ALCOs. Numbered it 8 after the last LAJ ALCO. Still need to add some details & couplers. It's my MR right!

But Santa Fe did not keep them for their own use http://yardlimit.railfan.net/rebuilds/ssb/index.html. They retired 84-85 or got sold. LAJ has a long history of getting pressed to use overdue equipment. May be the current mode of operation with "standard" BNSF power out of the LA basin roster is more fair.

ps. I got the second P2K GP60 pair today. The models are from 2002 (last week arrived 1st production batch) and 2003 (2nd production batch) but had only two split axis. Most amazing are the ATSF/BNSF details like antennas (two per roof!), AC and light in the low nose. The much more modern Trainman GP38-2/39-2 got only a BNSF paint but no details. Nice glitch of P2K is the road number 8739 of one engine. That was the only engine at that time that looked different and would therefor require a different shell. A bad choice as the shell is of course unchanged.

Re: Freelance 2012 - lajry - 06-11-2012

Thanks for the link Reinhard. It agrees pretty much w/ the ATSF All Time Diesel Roster: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://atsfrr.net/resources/CrossetGene/all-time%20diesel%20roster/pwr1000.htm">http://atsfrr.net/resources/CrossetGene ... wr1000.htm</a><!-- m -->
But unlike yours you have to scroll thru it to look at the SSB1200s. Anybody know why no 1218 & 1219?

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 06-12-2012

Following the prototype are locals run be pairs go GP60.

The color of the AC units on the cab roof is a nice puzzle. They start all with ATSF yellow but it looks like the AC units are not very reliable and will be replaced rather often. The replacement units may be light gray (I guess that is the manufacturer primer), BNSF orange, black like roofs at BNSF painted GP39-2 or dark blue (may be old ATSF paint found in the cabinet). All that changes without any system at most older ATSF engines. I think they take what ever can be grabbed first in the parts store.
I decided to stay with the original yellow on two units and painted two orange (after the photos have been taken). However, most units have in 2012 one of the replacements with a random color.

The stencil is great, too! You'd also normally see one or two of the two largest Details West battery boxes next to that case.

The batterie boxes are on their way too. It will take some more time/weeks until they arrive. This is the sign on the box I "borrowed" from a photo:

It is currently just assembled, painted and "put" on the layout. Will do some ground cover, grass etc. when I do the next scenery update session.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 06-26-2012

Somehow did a SW1500 of Sandersville RR manage to get on my layout. That made me looking into kaolin industry in Sandersville GA. Bing and Google are supporting that remote locations with low resolution only. Streetview is not helpful at all and photos from the loading facilities within the plants are very sparse. This one http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/pictures/56748/IMG_4597web.jpg is the best one I could find. There is lots of space for freelance.....

ps. Don't worry. The Georgia kaolin industry is prototypical correct at the very east end of my layout Wink

Re: Freelance 2012 - alcanman - 06-27-2012

Hi Reinhard,

I really like those last two pics of your layout, particularly the combination and placement of the structures, which look very prototypical.

Placing structures on a layout requires a lot of thought and care. Too often we see structures placed randomly , which can result in an layout
looking un-protypical and unrealistic.

Coincidentally, I have just been looking at the June 'Trains' magazine which has a 6 page article on the Sandersville Railroad.

Your layout continues to inspire. Thumbsup

regards,

Mal

Hi Mal,
I did not know that because I did not subscribe the Trains mag. Have to find the June 2012 issue somewhere. Thanks for the tip.

ps. The Georgia based kaolin theme has been temporary decorated on the layout. In the meantime is the decoration back to SoCal. The white paint on the original blue buildings is the only reminder of the excursion. I love it to do temporary changes with minimum effort.

Re: Freelance 2012 - FCIN - 06-27-2012

Reinhard;

Love the way you can swap scenes around for different industries and themes, not to mention having the layout represent different railroads. I operate my (still under construction) layout as different railroads, depending on which locomotive I want to use on a given day, but I need to explore the idea of swapping industries some more. Lot's of potential there! Keep up the great work! You keep a lot of us very inspired!

FCIN Wrote:...but I need to explore the idea of swapping industries some more....

If you plan to have the possibility to swap industries/structures you should refrain from my mistake of not perfect level ground. That lets the buildings "hoover" over ground or you are forced to cover it by some ground cover and glue.
I suggest you "reserve" some areas where you plan to "put" industry buildings and make that areas perfect level. I used thin blue foam but that is a poor choice for perfect level. I will go with styrene next time. Ground cover should be concrete/asphalt paint only. You should also think about the next track used to serve the industry. The track may be street running (perfect choice to "put" a structure close to the track) or ballasted. The transition of the ballast to the level area for the building should be planned in advance.
