A lot of RR's would have a flagman direct/stop traffic while the train was working there.

May be this setup is simple and prototypical. I did find the W. St. Ana Street Anaheim, CA with a similar solution to get the track on and off the road. Covering three tracks on the vertical road all together with two gates is simple and logical to me.

What kind of foam are you using between the rails????

I cut a strip of 0,45" wide 0.06" thick blue foam, the road is made of blue foam too but a little bit thicker.

Reinhard,

If it weren't for the strip with the push pins I would have thought that was a pic taken from Google Maps! Thumbsup

Beautifully done... Thumbsup

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-06-2012

The road got a temporary solid black coat to equalize the shades of color on the plaster and the blue foam

After that the final gray road paint has been applied and the road has been opened to the public. Street marks, weathering etc. will be applied later. Currently is the front rim under construction.

I had no luck to find any kid of "pencil" to draw yellow markers on dark road surface. I did also check virtual hundreds of pens in the US during our trip last year. White is never a problem. the white ink stays like printed on top of any surface but yellow fades away within seconds. The August issue of the Model Railroader rep ors on page 17 about "highway stripes" made by Summit Customcuts (http://www.summit-customcuts.com/roadmarkings1.html). I placed an order and will try to get some nice yellow markers on my gray roads.

Re: Freelance 2012 - shortliner - 07-06-2012

Reinhard, if you put "LED laces" into ebay.co.uk they work very well set into the road as flares - they give a solid light or flicker at two speeds - the faster one is more effective - add a small piece of black-painted wire insulation against the end to make it look like the body of the flare

Re: Freelance 2012 - shortliner - 07-06-2012

Reinhard - for your yellow markings try a search for "chinagraph pencils" or "chinagraph propelling pencils" they are a wax lead that will write on most surgaces and they come in yellow , white and a number of other colours best kept in the fridge in warm weather! Item number: 380404526112 for example

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-06-2012

Hi Jack,
I will stay with the Cantilever grade xing signal from Walthers. I have some and they are on sale from Walthers. Just a matter of some weeks waiting.....
The china graph are great and work on almost all surface but the blue foam under the paint is too delicate for any kind of pencil. I tried several and all dig a visible trench Sad As the decals are on order already just another matter of some weeks waiting....
However, thanks a lot for the welcome recommendations.

That is the signaling of the intersection with three crossing tracks I choose. One more will be set where the track exits the road center into the industries.

ps. Don't worry about the sand on the road. The vacuum has to wait until the ground cover has set.

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 07-06-2012

This scene reminds me of the south end of J yard, but it could be lots of other places:
There's lots of room for other details -- I've mentioned utility poles, but street lights, the BLMA radio repeater tower and the RIX highway rails would be good choices in this area, too.     For that matter, don''t forget dumpers. Walthers, SS Ltd, and NJI have done these. And porta-potties!

I am glad it looks like somewhere in the LA basin.

jwb Wrote:...There's lots of room for other details -- ....
I have to refrain from doing that now because I will replace the industry in the back with more prototypical structures. The foreground is very much endangered while I work at the background.

But I am thinking if I should continue the new road until the right end of the layout. The area with the bushes is not well suited for industry building due to it's limited size between the tracks. The area is also split by the border of the removable part in front of the balcony door. A street would cover a lot of that "dead space" and provide a good anchor for other industries.
An other consideration are sidewalks. For sure not in the foreground between yard and road (Hampton St. and Downey Rd. have both none at the yard side) but the other side of the road is a good candidate. The area in and around Vernon is very well equipped with them.

ps. Did you see a new KFC restaurant in that area? I would be glad to have prototypical correct KFC Wink

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 07-06-2012

I'd add a roach coach before I put in a KFC!

Re: Freelance 2012 - sailormatlac - 07-06-2012

This is getting better and better!

A KFC! OMG! It always remember me 70s Life-Like HO blue boxes advertising!
