The scene is shaping very nicely! Worship

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-07-2012

Lance Mindenheim advocates the idea of building walls covered with photos of the prototype. A building with nice advertisement found at 2750 South Alameda served as a test object.
I got a warning that the resolution will be below 220 dpi during printing. The printout is low quality. Another common problem of street view images is the interruption of single image shots. In this case in the words whol--esale and ent--rance over the roller gate. However, it is a nice alternative for the background. You local guys should take your camera and do high resolution photos for that purpose like Lance does.

I haven't played with it other than at a demo, but Windows Live Photo Gallery (XP-Vista-7) can assemble two or more photos into a panorama and resolve conflicts like this -- it might be worth a try.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-09-2012

The road is continued to the west. It is tilt to the left to cover the gap of the removable section in front of the balcony door. That way are structures either permanent installed (glued) on the main layout (left) or temporary "put" on the removable part (right). I did miss that design point in the past and got some problems and inflexibility placing buildings.

I decided to have no sidewalks even I would like to do so. They would interfere at several locations with the tracks and result in unusual not very prototypical solutions. Better no sidewalks than lousy ones......

Reinhard, I've been giving some thought now and then to your idea of a KFC. One thing I've found about railfanning industrial areas is that it's hard to find chain fast food nearby. The chain fast foods tend to be concentrated in the highest-traffic places, like arterial roads near freeway exits or prosperous residential areas (but not TOO prosperous, or they'll zone em out). I'd question whether you can find any chain fast food in Vernon itself, for instance -- probably because the people who work there only go out on break or lunch, and a roach coach stops in the parking lot and gets their business anyhow.

However, you could well find a taqueria advertising tacos, pastrami, cheeseburgers, chili fries, etc, often with weird hours like 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Oh, I am sorry. That was thought to be a joke only. I know there are no fast food restaurants from any well known chain in Vernon. We had lunch at Soto adjacent to the beautiful painted pigs 357 I was just kidding because I have that nice KFC kit and I do like the taste of KFC original receipt style chicken so much. It would be a nice gesture of the old colonel for a foreign client to quickly erect a KFC restaurant in or in the immediate neighborhood of Vernon.
However, the nice KFC restaurant will be replaced with a prototypical Vernin building some time later (very much later Wink ?)

ps. Yes, I know about the quality of KFC chicken meat and the calorie of the oil soaked breadcrumb coating. Have just lost 40lbs to get ready for scuba diving in about seven weeks and there are still ten lbs to go.. Confusedhock:

The new road stretches the layout optical to the west and the engineer got a new opportunity to block a road Wink

Reinhard, what's that cream-colored structure at the far right?

You mean the back side of the trailer from this photo http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/faraway52/FL2012/fb2865fb.jpg?t=1341589455 posted on 06 Jul 2012, 16:38?

Ah, OK. Now I get it.

faraway Wrote:... The August issue of the Model Railroader rep ors on page 17 about "highway stripes" made by Summit Customcuts (http://www.summit-customcuts.com/roadmarkings1.html). I placed an order and will try to get some nice yellow markers on my gray roads.

The summit decals arrived. They come in the well known microscale envelops but the white head of the envelope where microscale prints the name and part number of the decal is blank and no sheet instruction sheet is included. I guess microscale produces the decals for summit.

The order and paypal payment was done 7/6. The decals arrived 7/11. I think that is a very good for an international customer!

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 07-11-2012

Whoops, I meant this comment on the other thread.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-11-2012

The decals are nice to install. The thin stripes do not tear when applied. The time to soap is less than one minute. I am glad to have the very prominent yellow stripes on both sides of the track in the street. This separation in car/rail/car is so typical for this kind of street running.

The intersection of Leonis Blvd and Seville Ave might be a sample prototype. The car and rail signs for the Leonis Blvd are the same but the Seville Ave has two sets. One to protect the rails some yards away from the intersection and a second set immediate at the intersection for cars only.

ps. The solid yellow stripes you see on the two photos are from two sets. This is not an economical solution for large layouts or long roads. It is made for ISLs Wink

Re: Freelance 2012 - Trucklover - 07-11-2012

Looking good Reinhard! I like the street markings, they look great! I was thinking about getting some of these from Summit too when I ordered some of their kits but decided to leave it for my next order from them when I get a few of their modern highway interchange signs Misngth

Did you seal these in place with any sealer or just lay them down?

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-11-2012

Josh, they got Micro Sol only. the stripes look very good. I am not sure how well they sit when I do some weathering on the road.

The larger RXR signs are not prefect. They have a semi gloss shine. I did put a layer Microscale dull coat with the brush over them but they are still not perfect flat with the road surface. I have a RXR stencil somewhere (could not find it for month...). So the RXR decals got a gray road paint layer and I will try the stencil later. However, the yellow stripes ore perfect.
