A very plain shoebox has been added. It is inspired by the rear walls of the industry structure found in Vernon at the corner of Corona and Fruitland Ave.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-14-2012

Another structure at the far west end has been added. It sits at the outside of the curved track. I could not find a suitable prototype in Vernon but Golden West Fruit in Commerce (Corvette St) has a nice backside that could be used for inspiration. I did not like the massive square slabs (4" x 4")and changed them to rectangular shape (2" x 4")
The structure resides on the balcony door hatch and is removable. It is only "put" in place.

The curved front made of 0.02" styrene has been glued in place after the structure had it's own stability. The 2" wide slabs are decoration only and have been glued on the walls of the completed base structure.

and added some details in that area

Looks good, very modern !

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-15-2012

Thanks for the nice comments

The road became weathered today.
I use a light brown powder in plain water to get a wash. That wash is brushed on the road and massaged into the surface with the sponge. A second wash makes it more intense a plain wet brush and a paper towel removes excessive wash. I do not recommend to use white powder. It is too strong and cold. A light brown looks more natural.

The result may be reworked with some water when ever you like. In my case around the decals when their glue has set again.
A problem are all kind of scratches in the road surface. They are emphasized if you like it or not....

faraway Wrote:Josh, they got Micro Sol only. the stripes look very good. I am not sure how well they sit when I do some weathering on the road.

The larger RXR signs are not prefect. They have a semi gloss shine. I did put a layer Microscale dull coat with the brush over them but they are still not perfect flat with the road surface. I have a RXR stencil somewhere (could not find it for month...). So the RXR decals got a gray road paint layer and I will try the stencil later. However, the yellow stripes ore perfect.

Thanks for the info, how did the stripes hold up during weathering? Have any of them started to lift or peal anywhere? The only reason i ask is that I used some adhesive backed striping (I forgot who makes it but they make them in white and yellow specifically for HO roads) and while they went on very nice, over time they began to lift and peal up Wallbang

Do you scratch build your structures or using the old Nu-Line Structures kits? If your scratch building them are you making a plain shell of the structure and then gluing "panels" to it to get the module concrete look common of most modern industrial warehouses. They look very nice!

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-15-2012

My KFC building had to go because Colonel Sanders did not respond to my request to establish a matching prototype to my model Big Grin
The property will be used by another fine key industry. Gilbert's body shop!
The prototype is funny. It looks like a Vernon property on the north side of E. Slauson but Google Maps puts that very property to Huntington Park and the Zip code fits Huntington park too. I am playing again with a street view captured image as the front of a styrene structure. It gives a nice color touch I could not get otherwise.

Josh, one part of a strip lifted after I applied excessive water. I stopped at that spot, let it dry, it settled back and did proceed weathering later.
The buildings are scratch build. The one on the photo is a "show box" made from 0.06" styrene plated with 2" wide 0.02" thick styrene. The larger structure build yesterday followed the same principe but the curved wall is 0.02" "thin" for easier curving and than plated with 0.02" too.

The body shop would be a good place for a Boley tow truck, either conventional or flat bed, or both.

That's what we got on stock Smile

some time later, details, paint and weathering done. Time to go to bed Smile

jwb: Do you know if the car shop is in Vernon or Huntington Park?

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 07-15-2012

Looks like you'd have to check the survey for the lot, or maybe do a title search!

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-16-2012

jwb Wrote:Looks like you'd have to check the survey for the lot, or maybe do a title search!

Well, my search with "gilbert body shop vernon" results in lots of "Vernon matches" while "gilbert body shop huntington park" returns lots of "Huntington Park matches". However the Zip code 90255 is Huntington Park and that matches the graphical map information from Google.
But you wrote "the survey for the lot". That sounds like an official register for lots/properties but I am not successful to find anything useful. Are the official records of lots public accessible in the internet?

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 07-16-2012

I believe you have to pay, or maybe just go down to the courthouse. Once you look carefully, there are lots of discrepancies -- I had to sell a property once, for instance, that had one street number on the house itself, but a different street number on the official title. Stuff happens. It could be, for whatever it's worth, that that part of the street is officially in Vernon, but the post office finds it easier to service it from a route based in the Huntington Park station -- but that's just pure speculation.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-16-2012

A patch on the front yard covers the old KFC sign mounting holes in the ground, a fence to the railroad and some more (junk) details added. The back yard is a "parking lot" for the "collectables" of the owner. A utility pole would be nice but would be too close to the front to survive more than some days...

The next area to be reworked is the central industry at the background. The track serving it is 6' long (about 1,80m). I am thinking about three alternatives
1. Three older buildings similar the the track side of the industry at E50th St between Corona Ave and Loma Vista Ave
2. One older building similar to the track side of the industry at S Soto St and E 46th St
3. One modern building similar to the track side of the industry at Rickenbacker Rd and Alexander St in Commerce

The challenge is to find a building that dominates two Genset with four 60' hight cube boxcar switching in front of it but looks no too boring plain.
