Some last signals and power poles and the very west end is complete for now.

Excellent progress !!!
I really like your layout and the deepth of details. Please keep up the good work.

Cheers, Gerd

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-17-2012

That is my next challenge. I need a structure close to a prototype in the Vernon area that fits on the 6' space in the background. It should support the optical long stretched impression built up by the road and dominate the switcher with a cut of four 60' boxcars to maintain the impression of small trains serving huge buildings.

I am thinking about three alternatives
1. Three older buildings similar the the track side of the industry at E50th St between Corona Ave and Loma Vista Ave
2. One older building similar to the track side of the industry at S Soto St and E 46th St
3. One modern building similar to the track side of the industry at Rickenbacker Rd and Alexander St in Commerce

How about this? <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.curatingla.com/storage/journal-images/eastsidebabylontour/CitadelMallBuilding.jpg%3F__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION%3D1293167535695&imgrefurl=http://www.curatingla.com/blog-index/2010/12/23/esotourics-east-side-babylon-bus-tour-exploring-some-of-las.html&h=240&w=346&sz=20&tbnid=sV0iGVPnmIRZJM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=130&zoom=1&usg=__iIpaVtRMPJ2RpN8FmmBjokAOY40=&docid=6WCc_QPFUkglEM&sa=X&ei=M20FUI7-C-7q2wW88NmQBQ&ved=0CGAQ9QEwAg&dur=3219">http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... g&dur=3219</a><!-- m -->

I thought about an inconspicuous structure like most found in Vernon and it should be rail served. I like the ordinary not outstanding industry buildings most.

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 07-17-2012

Well, I admit I was trying to prompt for some kind of variety -- even in Vernon, there are structures from the 1920s. Why not take another look at the terra cotta warehouse you set aside a few months back? It does seem to me that having different architectural styles would add to the apparent size of the layout.

This time I will stay with the shoe boxes Smile However, there are lots of different "shoe boxes" in Vernon. I have a detailed eye for the east end of my layout at the two buildings at the south side of E50st St and Alcoa Ave and Boyle Ave. The track side of both buildings have a lot of windows and brick. We will see if I can get that done but that will look different but is still a "shoe box".

Re: Freelance 2012 - jwb - 07-17-2012

Another piece of variety would be to think some more about Andrew in Australia's post on the aircraft industry, which does use shoeboxes, though some parts are fairly tall in "high bay" areas. There are/were shoebox aircraft plants in Pico Rivera, Hawthorne, El Segundo, Burbank, Long Beach, and Santa Monica, with smaller subcontractors all over the place. The Pico Rivera plant was a Ford assembly plant earlier, which would give you the option of swapping industries -- until the 1960s, there was a lot of auto assembly in Southern California, too, and it didn't die out completely until about 1990.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-19-2012

A first test of the long wall of an older building similar to the track side of the industry at S Soto St and E 46th St. It will not be dominated by a short cut of four 60' cars. The prototype has 21 sections. I added one at the street side (right hand) to stay clear of the street with a car at the first loading bay. Is that selective expansion? The overall length is 1.77m / 70". The sides are mirror inverted. The prototype has the S. Soto street left hand.

Some time later are the doors cut out and at the bottom and the top are supporting wood strips .4 * .4" glued to the backside with CA. An important step for all further handling. I need a stable construction and tight grip for rattle can spray in the gusty wind on the balcony later on.

Re: Freelance 2012 - fwwrmodeler - 07-19-2012

I'm not getting on what you did. The new warehouse is a mirror image of the site? Or are you using a mirror for the walls? I am in the planning stage's of a couple of large warehouses for my FWWR layout [Image: DSCN8747.jpg] [Image: DSCN5433.jpg]
There are two of these warehouses, approx 72" long, behind the yard on my layout and trying to plan on how to build such a large backdrop building. My first try was not braced up enough and was real wavy. I like how straight you building is. People have suggested a wood core. Could you take a couple of detail pics of the construction of this project? It might give me some ideas on how to construct my building. I'm just starting to do scenery after a year of building bench work and laying track.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-19-2012

Wayne,
this is the prototype in Vernon. It is not as modern as the one on your photos.
https://maps.google.de/maps?q=vernon+california&ll=34.001457,-118.21883&spn=0.001343,0.001998&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&hnear=Vernon,+Los+Angeles+County,+Kalifornien,+Vereinigte+Staaten&gl=de&t=h&z=20

The prototype has the Soto St on the left. My model has the road on the right. That is what I meant with "mirror" / exchange left and right side.

This is a view behind the curtain. You see the two supporting wood sticks. It will become even more stable when the roof is added. The top wood stick will be the support for the roof.

Started painting with the rattle can (in the storm on the balcony....). The blue ribbon is only on older street view at the bottom of the wall. The later done satellite photos show it under the roof.

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 07-20-2012

Got a roof, doors and patches. I use the street view version with the blue ribbon at the bottom and the patches all over the building. The sky view is more modern after the build has been fresh painted with the blue ribbon under the roof.

Reinhard,

I really like the simplicity of this structure and the way it naturally fits this area. I can't imagine anything better setting there.

Buildings that look big enough to deserve rail service. What a novel idea. Thumbsup I wish more modelers would get "IT".

Catt, the best thing is though it looks simplistic, this single track with lots of loading bay became a real challenge to switche.

Faraway: I used to love your previous structure and wans't sure about your move, but finally, I think it it quite convincing and realistic. Proportions are good and the warehouse dwarfes, as it shouyld, the freight cars. Thumbsup
