May be I should rename the thread to Freelance January 2012.... 357 I admit I am somehow helpless. The remaining currently planned work on the layout will not last until Xmas.

Re: Freelance 2012 - Gary S - 01-25-2012

I liked the red doors... but I also like the new look too. Keep up the great work, Reinhard!

Re: Freelance 2012 - sailormatlac - 01-26-2012

Reinhard, both version are quite nice.

In fact, you could have just washed down your first version with the peach color. We often see building which old billboard advertising is ghosted bihind a new layer of paint. Anyway, your work is inspiring. You're so fast at ballasting, it makes me jealous. 357

The ground cover has reached the far right end of the south yard.

After looking several times at the main road of the SWSSA layout and Garys Mykawa Rd I decided to have no "toy road" on my small layout and omit it at all. May be I can have a small piece of a road discontinued when the tracks of the south yard have been laid.

There is still one lot free. The containers etc. are place holders only. However, Lance uses them in a nice way and they are colorful. may be I should "steal/borrow" that idea. We will see. There are about 11 month time to decide and to do all the details of the layout Wink

Reinhard,

It looks really good. Wouldn't change a thing.

I agree with Larry, it looks very realistic as is. Thumbsup

I love the broken concrete road! How was that done?

Thanks for all the kind words.

The base is a 3.5" (9cm) wide and 0.11" (3mm) thick strip of blue foam. After the glue and paint has dried I drawn the lines with a pencil. The segment size is about 2" (5cm).
A scalpel was used to cut an irregular pattern at the end and some triangles at the joints of the concrete segments. One segment luckily wrapped up because the glue was not complete set. Some paint at the cuts and sand and green complete the scene.
When the ground cover has set I may add some more debris at the broken segments.

ps. I am currently working on the free lot Smile

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 01-26-2012

A stack of containers as a background structure matches a modern industry area very well. No wonder I did see it here several times. Some more details will be done when the glue of the fence posts has set. The container stack should be higher too. I did browse some German LHS and learned a single plastic box/container is at least 5€/$6. Should we found a model container factory and rob others...?

That completes the basic building phase of this layout. Next is a longer phase of relaxed detailing and eventually a very smooth transition into another restructuring phase.... :o

Some time later:

The HP printer-scanner-copier combination is a great low cost "background container plant" Big Grin

Re: Freelance 2012 - Tyson Rayles - 01-26-2012

It is looking most excellent and the detailing part is the most fun for me. Are you planing on adding a backdrop to it?

Tyson Rayles Wrote:It is looking most excellent and the detailing part is the most fun for me. Are you planing on adding a backdrop to it?

Mike, I do not plan to have a backdrop. I am under the impression that the buildings in modern industry areas are all about the same height. You do therefor not see the next buildings behind the building immediate in front to you. The only exception is a very small fragment of a building at the end of the canyon at the east side (the first buildings I did).

Re: Freelance 2012 - faraway - 01-26-2012

Finally a short overview of the restructured area. The size is about 13' by 2.5'. Two turnouts have been removed to lengthen tracks and simplify the track plan.

We start at the far right (west) with the kit bashed "bakery" and the container yard.

Two steps back bring the two buildings on the center on the photo.

That is the far left (east) with the reused General Mill parts
[Image: IMG_1176.jpg?t=1327600385]

And again two steps back bring the center structures on the picture.

Re: Freelance 2012 - alcanman - 01-26-2012

Reinhard,

Your latest pics really show how superb the layout is. You have achieved so much in such a short time. I hope you don't make too many changes, this is your
best effort to date. If I had the space available, I would simply copy your layout, it is excellent! Thumbsup

regards,

Mal
