Re: Scrap transloading!! - jwb - 03-31-2013

This thread, along with the one on rmweb, is very interesting. It's worth pointing out that when the loaded 20-foot containers are rubber-tired to ports, they are heavy and go on heavy-duty trailers.

I haven't checked - natiurally, the tractor could come from Trucks n Stuff, but does anyone know of a commercial model for this style heavy-duty trailer?

This is a fascinating ride on a straddle carrier <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=6zuwLVOrkiM&NR=1">http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=en ... OrkiM&NR=1</a><!-- m -->
- watching them operate is almost like a choreographed ballet dance

and this is an automatic stacking (robot) crane <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E0-EUdtDF8">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E0-EUdtDF8</a><!-- m --> which stacks up to 6 containers high

JWB - this might be a start point for the trailer <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thekentuckytrainman.com/it/374-promotex-1-87th-40-red-n-black-container-chassis-only-.html">http://www.thekentuckytrainman.com/it/3 ... only-.html</a><!-- m -->

EDIT - Looks like this may be the way to go <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.1-87vehicles.org/photo335/40ft_triaxle_chassis.php">http://www.1-87vehicles.org/photo335/40 ... hassis.php</a><!-- m -->

Re: Scrap transloading!! - kamerad47 - 04-01-2013

Really there is no need for the triaxle trailer there is only so much you can load it legally anyway!!!

Re: Scrap transloading!! - jwb - 04-01-2013

Remember that the stuff that goes back to China, Japan, Korea, etc is often recycled material, especially metal scrap or paper/cardboard, which are very heavy if you load them into a 20-foot container. 40-foot ISO containers and domestic containers carry lighter things like microwave ovens, televisions, model trains, etc. The 20-foot containers I see in the Los Angeles area are almost always on 3-axle trailers.

Athearn made a heavy 20' container chassis

and American Limited models makes a bulk tank container chassis that could also be used

Here is some more pics of my scrap transloading & some C&D loading on my shortline PRT (Passaic River Terminal RR) There are 3 kind of cars that they recieve here loaded scrap gons , C&D gons or ex woodchip cars & gons that get loaded with old roofing shingles which are sorted out in the CD building . I glue some sandpaper down & painted it with an airbrush & also buld a scale for the rolloff trucks , still a work in progess !

Re: Scrap transloading!! - jwb - 05-14-2013

Who makes the silver dumpster on the green truck in most of the photos? Good large-size HO dumpsters are hard to find! The Boley/Walthers seems to be about the only easy one to get.

Re: Scrap transloading!! - kamerad47 - 05-14-2013

They are matchbox Kenworth T 800 rolloffs

Re: Scrap transloading!! - jwb - 05-16-2013

Looks like the Matchbox trucks are a little hard to find, and I'm not sure if they're full 1:87. But your layout looks like a very, very interesting project. More, more!

Re: Scrap transloading!! - shortliner - 05-16-2013

One sold today on Ebay.com for $12 + postage - not sure of size but some of the others in the series are definitely 1/64th, which was why I didn't bid - and the postage would have been that again and a bit more!

Re: Scrap transloading!! - jwb - 05-16-2013

It looks like the best bet for now is the Walthers/Boley roll-on roll-off dumpster:

This is readily available and reasonably priced. Walthers also offers the dumpsters separately in 3-packs. As it comes, it seems to be a model of a 40 cubic yard capacity, which is typically used for demo and renovation -- in my neighborhood, if people are putting in new this and that, this size is used to haul away the old carpet, floors, lath, drywall, whatever.

There are lots of sizes, paint schemes, and weathering. I think the Walthers dumpsters could be cut down for other sizes. I'm noticing that they often get stored along rail rights of way, so they're a potential scenery item as well as part of an industry. This photo was taken from a train window:

Re: Scrap transloading!! - jwb - 05-19-2013

Is the Matchbox actually a roll-on roll-off, or is it a dump truck?
