I really like it too. I particularly like the way you've replicated the mortar which is more apparent in some areas than others.
I think the 'darker than intended appearance' may be accentuated by the lighter background and foreground, so I'm pretty sure that this will 'tone down' once nestled into its 'murkier' surroundings.
Just my humble opinion, of course.
