He is stretching Mindheims concept a little further. In all very interesting layout as he does use the space to do something that is manageble, especially if you donn't have, like most of us modest funds and not that many people as crew to run the layout. I like the idea of a typical ex branch line turned in to industrial track as you get by smaller fleet of Engines and freight cars and having them very realistic as possible. The the idea of having smaller power and shorter trains makes whole thing very realistic. I am a fan of big pwer but can never be able to justify them on the rather limited space I have so a Geep a few cars is the thing for me. About the background, it is hard to say as you need to see it person. many uses clever angles to get it right as the camera sees things in 2D istead of the Eye that sees things in 3D.
