I have multiple hard drives and use 2 dvd's as well. It took too long to scan the older pictures to risk losing them. I also replace CDs and DVDs with new copies now and again. Some folks claim they are not stable over time. I tried giving my kids backups of family DVD's but they just don't value them like I do.
I have an IDE/sata adapter <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://3btech.net/prwayusb20to.html">http://3btech.net/prwayusb20to.html</a><!-- m --> that I have been able to glean files from some bad hard drives. You plug it into the drive, then connect it to a computer. If the drive will run you can sometimes recover your documents.
sorry you lost those pictures, I hope you can recover them.
