Ballast question

I recently realized that no matter how careful I was while ballasting my track I ended up with a buildup on the inside webs of the track in some areas. Although in most cases this cannot be seen it tends to produce an unwanted noise as the wheels passover the buildup. Is there a safe way of removing this buildup without causing and damage to the rails?
