GERN In WVa.
#13
Thanks Gary, but the magazine cover was done by my brother Steven, who also took the photo and did the "editing job". Not to let all of the trade secrets out of the bag, but he was the originator of both GERN and Cookie Gibson.

Many years ago, when my brother was the proverbial "starving artist", he gave me, as a Christmas gift, a cheque, "good anytime for one weasel drawing". (At the time, he was doing a lot of cartooning depicting people represented as weasels - not in a nasty context, but simply using that animal's form instead of a human one.) After he became successful, I joked that perhaps it was time for me to "cash" the cheque. I requested a depiction of that old-time movie favourite, the race to the crossing. He borrowed a locomotive (now entrusted to my good friend Deano) and some covered hoppers, then added some imagination and came up with the drawing below. It's difficult to make out in the photo, but the door of the pursuing squad car is lettered for the "Thought Police". The narrator in the "bubble" represents a mutual friend.

Sorry about the quality of the photo - I didn't want to take it out of the frame, and had to crop off the top to eliminate glare on the glass.
